Chelsea record £90.1m loss in first full year under BlueCo ownership

Chelsea recorded losses of £90.1million in the first full year under their new ownership.

The figures for the year ending June 30, 2023 compare favourably with the previous 12 months, when Chelsea lost £121.4m in part due to government sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich, but still underline the club's sticky financial situation and the ongoing risk of a breach of Premier League financial rules.

Chelsea recorded an increase in turnover to £512.5m, up from £481.3m in the previous year, largely thanks to a raft of player sales, including the £75m departure of Kai Havertz to Arsenal, as well as increases in matchday and commercial revenue and the success of the women's team.

However, the broadcasting revenue decreased by £9.1m to £225.9m after the club failed to qualify for Europe last season.

The figures were announced by BlueCo 22, the company with which Clearlake Capital and Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly bought the Blues and French side Strasbourg.

BlueCo announced a loss of £653m for the period of March 2, 2022 - when it was founded - through to June 30, 2023.

It is possible that Chelsea, who are unlikely to qualify for Europe next season unless they win the FA Cup, may have to offload players before June 30 to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, with homegrown midfielder Conor Gallagher most frequently linked with an exit.
