Chelsea send transfer chief to complete £53m deal as possible Reece James replacement approached

It wouldn't be a transfer window without Chelsea. It certainly isn't a summer window without Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital anymore.

The Blues have committed over £600million on deals for new players in the past two main windows alone during their mammoth recruitment splurge and it doesn't look set to stop anytime soon. Even with the restriction of Premier League financial rules bounding clubs tighter than before, the club are expected to be busy.

They remain convinced that compliance with profitability and sustainability regulations (PSRs) will be achieved, and in some quarters it is said that it won't cost them the soul of the club and a group of talented academy graduates. For many that will be believed when it is seen.

Regardless, whoever the head coach is there is going to be movement at Stamford Bridge and Mauricio Pochettino himself admitted as much. “Now is going to start a period where players want to leave, maybe some offers arrive or players that we want to add to the squad," he said with less than a week left of the season. "Of course, we have already started to work on this."

Negotiators in Brazil

Chelsea have reportedly sent staff to Brazil to watch Palmeiras against Independiente del Valle on Thursday morning (Wednesday night in South America). The game will include two players of extreme interest to Chelsea with already signed teenager Kendry Paez expected to be in action for the Ecuadorian side.

As for Palmeiras, they have one of Brazil's hottest prospects in their ranks, and Estevao Willian is catching the eye. Chelsea are said to have agreed a deal with the player over a move which will be structured with around £25million up front and £28million in possible add-ons for the 17-year-old.

Estevao is a player admired across the world and Chelsea are now keen to tie him down, hence sending their own chiefs to the game to speed up negotiations. The Blues are thought to be confident of striking a deal.

football.london says: So far, when Boehly-Clearlake want, they tend to get. Perhaps that's not a surprise given the staggering level of money paid out to clubs in the last two years. When it comes to teenagers being snapped up, they are willing to pay top dollar.

Estevao is a player many deem to be worth the investment, so getting over to Brazil and pushing this across the line makes sense. However, the question will remain just how Chelsea plan to integrate Estevao and Paez into the first team. Until a pathway has been made and proven, there will be justifiable doubts over continuing to spend so lavishly on players that don't help the current first-team squad.

Pedro Lima approach

On the subject of talented young players from South America. Chelsea have reportedly made an approach for Brazilian Serie B right-back Pedro Lima. The 17-year-old plays for Sport Recife and is capped by his country at age-group level.

It is said that Chelsea have been keeping tabs on him as well as others in a continuation of their youth transfer drive. Now, they have reportedly spoken to his agent, sounding out possible details. Chelsea aren't the only side interested in signing Lima though, with Manchester City also linked with the player.

Sport chief João Marcelo Barros admitted the interest in his teenage talent. “There’s nothing very new there. Scouts from all over the world have been watching him. Maybe the news won’t get out, but a lot of scouts have come from abroad this year.”

football.london says: A penny for the thoughts of Josh-Kofi Acheampong. The versatile full-back only made his senior debut a fortnight ago and now there are links with a player that would be directly competing with him to make the breakthrough at the club.

This is one of the issues with the youth policy, it appears to undermine the academy which has had so much success in recent years of producing top-end players. Acheampong and his Under-18 side have had a remarkable year at Cobham, but they face obstacles in the pathway.

Lima would be yet another player to join for what is reportedly around £10million as a starting price. He has Reece James, 24, and Malo Gusto, 20, in front of him, with those two players already established as being immovable when fit. How does Lima fit in with Acheampong and the others trying to break through? It's far from clear.
