2025 is upon us, and a new year brings more football around the corner for Chelsea as they look to continue to challenge towards the top of the Premier League in the new year.

Enzo Maresca’s side are back in action on Saturday as they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park (3pm kick-off). They will hope to get back to winning ways after picking up just one point from the last nine available.

In their last outing on Monday night, they fell to a 2-0 away defeat against relegation-threatened Ipswich Town. The result leaves them in fourth place in the Premier League table.

A new year also means that we are now into the January transfer window with speculation rife about possible incomings and outgoings at Stamford Bridge. With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at some of the stories doing the rounds, and also given our own thoughts.

Blues eye striker duo

Chelsea are looking at both Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson as new striker options, according to TalkSPORT .The duo have been named as potential January targets for the Blues as they look to bolster their attacking options in the January transfer window.

The report says that Chelsea have been long-term admirers of Ferguson, and that they have sent scouts to watch Delap on numerous occasions so far this season. However, a deal for either player would be ‘difficult’ this season with Brighton said to rate Ferguson at £80-100m.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a loan move away from the Seagulls in January with several clubs already been named as potential destinations.

FL says : "Chelsea got the chance to watch Delap up close on Monday when the Blues took on Ipswich at Portman Road, and he certainly impressed with his performance with a goal and an assist. Ipswich will be keen to not lose one of their key players in the middle of a fight against relegation but there is reports of a release clause which will give the club no choice.

"As for Ferguson, it seems that a permanent deal may be off the cards due to the price. But Chelsea could potentially join the race to sign him on loan, if Brighton would be willing to do a deal with the Blues, considering game time and potentially strengthening a rival, could be the stumbling block."

Christopher Nkunku update

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has given the latest on Christopher Nkunku following more talk that the player could move away from Chelsea in the current window. CaughtOffside have linked Barcelona with an interest in signing him on loan, if they fail to register Dani Olmo.

But it seems that Chelsea wouldn’t be keen on a deal, unless the player pushes for a move.

Speaking to Givemesport , Romano said: “Let’s see also what happens with Nkunku. He is always in the news, but Chelsea insists to keep the player at the club.

“It could only change if Nknuku goes and tells them ‘ok, I want to leave, I want to play more.’ So in that case, the situation could change, and Chelsea could consider to bring in one more offensive player.

“But at the moment, they are happy with the squad they have.”

FL says: "Nkunku’s future at Chelsea should depend on any incoming business in the next month. Should Chelsea be successful in bringing in another attacking player that will push Nkunku further down the pecking order, then they should let him go out on loan for more game time.

"However, without any new additions, letting him go would only reduce the options available to Enzo Maresca. Having scored just one goal in their last three games, that is something that Chelsea should not be doing over the next month."
