Watford have confirmed the signing of Chelsea defender Caleb Wiley on loan for the remainder of the season. The 20-year-old, who initially joined the Blues from Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise Atlanta United in the summer, has arrived at Vicarage Road on deadline day after spending the first half of the campaign at Strasbourg.

Wiley, a three-cap United States international, made seven appearances for Liam Rosenior's Strasbourg before Chelsea decided to recall him - and send him to Watford. During his time in France, Wiley started four matches, playing 375 minutes in total, although he missed a large chunk due to shoulder and knee injuries.

Now, Wiley is going to be hoping to get some much-needed game time under his belt with Watford in the second tier and Hornets' boss Tom Cleverley was delighted to secure his services.

"Caleb's a really athletic left-back with great technical quality, as you'd expect from a Chelsea player," Cleverley told the club's website.

"It'll be a couple of weeks before we see him in training, so that's a known quantity and we're fine with that. It's great to add Caleb to our defensive options and I'm looking forward to getting him integrated within the group."

Wiley is still out with a shoulder issue he sustained back in November and is not expected to be back for at least another couple of weeks. "It'll be a couple of weeks before we see him in training, so that's a known quantity, and we're fine with that," Cleverley added.

"It's great to add Caleb to our defensive options and I’m looking forward to getting him integrated with the group."

As for Chelsea, Wiley's departure is their third confirmed transfer of this window. It followed Renato Veiga's loan move to Juventus and Cesare Casadei's £12.5m switch to Torino. Trevoh Chalobah was, also, recalled from his loan at Crystal Palace, while David Datro Fofana, Aaron Anselmino and Gabriel Slonina have all returned to Chelsea this month after spending time out on loan during the first half of the season.

While Wiley's exit is number three for Chelsea, the Blues are set to sanction two more, at least, before Monday's 11pm deadline. Joao Felix is on course to complete a straight loan switch to AC Milan, while Ben Chilwell is set to make the switch to Crystal Palace on loan until the summer.
