The January transfer window may now officially be over, but that does not stop talk around transfers at Stamford Bridge.

The winter window closed at 11pm on Monday night with the Blues making just one addition to their squad. The arrival of teenage midfielder Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne was confirmed on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old arrives to provide cover and support for fellow midfielders Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. His arrival cost the Blues a fee of around £12 million.

The January window had more focus on outgoings for Chelsea with a total of 17 players leaving the club either on loan or permanent deals. Joao Felix was the final confirmed departure with the forward joining AC Milan on loan.

For the club, eyes will now turn to the remainder of the season and preparation for the summer transfer window. While we wait, here is a look at a couple of the stories doing the rounds over the last 24 hours.

Failed deadline day hijack

Chelsea reportedly failed with a late attempt to hijack Tottenham’s deadline day signing of Mathys Tel, according to L’Equipe. The report says that the Blues made their move while the Frenchman was at the airport waiting for his flight to England to complete his move to Spurs.

It is however said that the attempt from Chelsea came too late, with the player already making his decision on moving to Tottenham.

Tel was linked with Chelsea throughout the January window but the forward’s transfer to Spurs was completed before Monday’s 11pm deadline, with him eligible to make his debut in the Carabao Cup this week.

FL says: Who knows what would have happened if Chelsea had made their move just an hour or two earlier, but it seems that the late attempt came too late and the Blues had to accept the forward moving to Tottenham.

Tel would have been a good signing for the Blues, but he may have been reluctant to move to Stamford Bridge due to the competition in the squad. The Bayern man made it clear that he was keen to play regularly if he was to move on - it may be something that Spurs can offer slightly more.

Summer transfer ‘groundwork’

Despite a quiet January transfer window, work done during it could still benefit Chelsea when it comes to the summer window. According to the Daily Mail, conversations held over the last month have ‘laid the groundwork’ for potential summer arrivals.

Both Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens are specifically mentioned, suggesting that the Blues will reignite their interest when the window re-opens at the end of the current season.

FL says : While Enzo Maresca may have been keen to add more to his squad over the last month, work done in the window just gone may be more beneficial when the summer window comes around. The January window is more a sellers market with teams more reluctant to let players go mid-season.

It means that Chelsea are more likely to get better deals if they wait it out until the summer window. If that proves to be the right strategy, is still to be seen.
