Chelsea in the groove on and off the field as they swat aside West Ham

Whether or not this was enough to prompt Chelsea co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly to kiss and make up remains to be seen, but the pair will have enjoyed their trip to East London – even if they did have to sit next to each other.

The pair made their first public appearance since it emerged they want to buy each other out, and they will be encouraged that things may finally be coming together on the pitch after watching Nicolas Jackson put Chelsea on course for a comfortable victory.

Head coach Enzo Maresca revealed after the game that Eghbali and Boehly had visited the dressing room, saying: “It’s always good when you win the game for them and especially because they were here. They were in the changing room (after the game) and they were all happy.”

Since being beaten by Wolverhampton Wanderers in February, Chelsea have only lost Premier League games to Arsenal and Manchester City, and this was the first time the Blues have won their first three away games of a new season since 2017-18, under Antonio Conte.

Whisper it quietly, but Chelsea may not be the basket case on the pitch many would like you to believe. Since the beginning of May only Erling Haaland has scored more League goals than Jackson, who produced two cool finishes in the first half at the London Stadium.

Jackson added an assist shortly after half-time, as Cole Palmer netted Chelsea’s third, and West Ham lost their first three home League games of the season for the first time in the club’s history.

Having been replaced by matchwinner Christopher Nkunku at Bournemouth, Jackson started Saturday’s early game like a man with a point to prove and showed off his new Michael Jackson Thriller celebration after opening the scoring.

Maresca, who confirmed he, too, is a Michael Jackson fan, said: “Hopefully, he can dance more! In terms of his numbers, he is doing really well and off the ball he is working hard.”

Starting his first game for the club, Jadon Sancho notched up his second Chelsea assist in two appearances when he played Jackson in down the left and he slotted the ball beautifully between the legs of West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Jackson should have come up with a Moses-inspired celebration after his second goal in the 18th minute, given the way the West Ham defence parted like the Red Sea to let him in. It was a Mosies Caicedo pass that sent the striker in on goal and once again he found the back of the net.

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten had looked pretty pleased with himself during a pre-match interview with broadcasters, but there was not much for manager Julen Lopetegui to smile about.

The home fans would no doubt like Steidten to explain the decision to sign midfielder Guido Rodriguez, who was hauled off after 37 terrible minutes.

Lopetegui confirmed the change was tactical and not enforced, but said: “If you make a change before half time, it is not the fault of the player. I can do better. Do not only watch the player, but watch myself in these moments.”

Lopetegui appealed for a penalty after Crysencio Summerville went down in the area. Wesley Fofana had grabbed at his arm, but VAR did not overturn referee Sam Barrott’s decision. West Ham briefly thought Mohammed Kudus had pulled a goal back before realising it had been correctly ruled out for offside.

Those Hammers fans who had grown tired of David Moyes may be wishing they had not, given their club’s start this season. Any hope of a second-half fightback was killed less than two minutes after the restart, when Jackson set up Palmer to extend Chelsea’s advantage.

It was hard to tell whether the supporters in the gangways were heading back to their seats after half time or making an early break for the exits. There were jeers of dissatisfaction at Lopetegui’s decision to take off West Ham’s brightest player, Summerville, before the hour mark and the Spaniard can forget about enjoying any sort of honeymoon period.

Of the reaction of the fans, Lopetegui said: “I’m not worried. They have the right to complain, for sure. We have to do better. We have a lot of time to do this.”

Only a good save from Areola prevented substitute Nkunku making it even worse for the home side, who spent around £100 million on new signings this summer and look worse for it.

Chelsea, on the other hand, may be ready to show that Eghbali and Boehly they have not wasted their billions, even if only one of them may be in charge long enough to see if this really is the start of something that can last.

Bowen reflects on defeat

Following West Ham’s 3-0 defeat, captain Jarrod Bowen told TNT Sports: “I don’t think we were ever in the game really, which is probably an awful thing to say. But if we’re being honest the goals they scored were very easy on our part - two almost gifts.

“That’s the thing in this league you have to be switched on at every moment and they punished us with the first goal and then the second goal again - I haven’t seen it back - but on the pitch it felt like it was quite easy to play through.”

Discussing Nicolas Jackson, Joe Cole told TNT Sports: “I think Enzo Maresca saw they could break past West Ham and Nicolas Jackson is fantastic at that. It’s what he does.

”[He has] good numbers. He is a young man, a young player, he’s learning his trade. People talked about Didier Drogba’s first two seasons when he wasn’t as prolific as he later became. Nevertheless, he has scored the goals and he will get better.

An Argentina-Brazil battle developing as Paqueta brings down Fernandez and the verbals continue long after the challenge. Chelsea combine nicely into the box before the ball drops to Felix who, just left of the penalty spot, fires his effort into the side netting.

Chelsea come back again and you’re just waiting for one of them to let fly. Eventually it’s Caicedo but a sliding tackle sees his effort deflected wide. The corner nearly catches Areola out but he does well to punch clear.

Neto tracks to back to block Antonio’s cross out for another West Ham corner. Sanchez opts for the punch this time and punches well. Chelsea are in again straight away though. Madueke is fed and breaks into the left of the box and with options he decides to shoot but it’s straight at Areola.

Chelsea’s goalscorers Palmer and Jackson are taken off in place of Felix and Nkunku. Quite the strength in depth for Chelsea in attack this season.

Kudus, now on the left does well to keep the ball alive and hook it back across the six-yard-box but Colwill is there to clear. Moments later and the ball falls to Soler on the edge of the box. He goes for the right-footed curler into the far corner but it’s easy for Sanchez.

A first bit of defending for Disasi who gives up the corner but Sanchez claims it well and Chelsea break in numbers. Palmer looks to slip on Madueke before Jackson takes over as he looks to let fly but his effort is blocked. It is so easy for Chelsea to break and find themselves in a dangerous position running at the West Ham defence.

A diagonal ball finds Kudus on the right who he looks to cut in past Cucurella and let fly but the Spanish left-back manages to put in a sliding block that sees the ball deflect arm into the arms of Sanchez.

After a couple of half-clearances, Bowen combines with Paqueta in the box to work an opening but his left-footed effort goes high and wide.

Chelsea have a wonderful chance to double their lead as Jackson once again comes in off their left hand side before rolling a ball across to Palmer on the penalty spot who looks to stroke into the bottom right corner but it goes just wide. You would expect a man of his quality to finish that chance.

Disasi filled in at right back against Bournemouth but looked uncomfortable in and out of possession so it was no surprise to see him withdrawn on the hour mark for Tosin, with Fofana shifted out to the full back position.

Preview: Chelsea look to continue impressive away record as West Ham hope for first home points

West Ham will be particularly cautious of this after their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in May. Despite that, they will take confidence from their 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture when they met at the London Stadium in the second week of the campaign.
