Chelsea FC 3 - 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

22:07

Chelsea beat Wolves 3-1 and leapfrog Manchester City and Newcastle back into the top four of the Premier League. Victory ends a run of five league matches without a win for the Blues, who did not have it all their own way but ended up deserving winners. Tosin gave them the lead with a goal that was ruled offside on the field but awarded by a VAR review, before Doherty equalised for the visitors after a Sanchez error on the stroke of half-time. A quickfire second-half double did the business for Maresca's side, however, with Cucurella bundling in from close range on the hour before Madueke nodded in Chalobah's goalward header. The hosts were relatively comfortable from there, Jackson finding the net from an offside position before missing another presentable chance. Wolves did continue to test Sanchez but an xG defeat of 3.15-0.86 tells the ultimate story. They remain 17th, clear of the relegation zone by just four goals, and face Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Bournemouth in their next four league outings. Chelsea are next in action at Manchester City on Saturday evening. Thanks for following!

The game settles down again after a disastrous few minutes for Wolves. They were right in the game heading for the hour mark but it looks a long way back now.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:34

Caicedo is booked for blatantly stopping Cunha in his tracks as Wolves looked to break.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:34

Only Diego Costa against Swansea in 2014-15, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink against Tottenham in 2001-02 and Gianluca Vialli against Barnsley in 1997-98 have scored more goals against a side in a Premier League season for Chelsea than Noni Madueke's four against Wolves this campaign.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:22

Strand Larsen comes a few inches away from getting on the end of Sa's long pass but Sanchez arrives to gather just in the nick of time.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:21

Palmer has looked a little more lively at the start of this half. He picks out Madueke again, who can't get enough on his shot to threaten.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:18

Ait-Nouri and Semedo have remained on their unfamiliar sides at the start of this half, a move that helped Wolves back into the game during the opening 45 minutes. Semedo wins a free-kick out on the left, which Sanchez claims.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:17

Palmer sees a shot blocked before a back-post cross is kept alive by Madeueke, but to no avail.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:15

Cunha goes for another inswinging corner but gets it wrong on this occasion, hitting the side netting at the near post.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:14

A purposeful Palmer pass finds Madueke out on the right. The ball is worked across the box and then back to Chelsea's right-winger, who sees a shot blocked. Moments later, he bends another effort but Sa easily saves.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:12

Wolves have won two of the last three Premier League games in which they've gone into half time level - but were also all square at the break in the reverse fixture against Chelsea at Molineux in August, going on to lose 6-2.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:10

The players are back out and Sarabia gets the second half underway.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:07

Cunha has been at the heart of Wolves' best moments and is the man they will hope can inspire them to an upset here. The Brazilian is threatening to add to his 10 goals for the season,. taking four of the visitor's five shots and accounting for four of their eight touches in the Chelsea box. At the other end, Cole Palmer has fired off a couple of efforts but has not looked himself in general, perhaps affected by the ankle injury that nearly ruled him out of tonight's game. Whichever of the two steps it up most in the second half could be the difference between the sides.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:00

Chelsea had the better of most of that half but cannot argue with going in level after allowing Wolves right back into the game in the last 15 minutes. Everything was going swimmingly for the hosts when Tosin slotted in the opener on 24 minutes, the on-field offside call overturned by a VAR review. But Pereira's visitors improved as the half wore on and equalised on the stroke of half-time when Sanchez dropped Cunha's corner and Doherty was on hand to tap in. Maresca's side lead 0.98-0.7 on xG and are still 55.56% likely to pick up three points tonight by our win probability rating, but Wolves will be clinging onto their 16.6% chance.

Goal Matthew James Doherty

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:51

Wolves have a corner with 90 seconds to play in the first half. What can they muster?

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:49

Wolves coach Luis Miguel is booked for his remonstrations after Strand Larsen fouls James close to halfway.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:47

There are six minutes added on at the end of the first half.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:47

That man Cunha finds space on the right side of the box this time, but with team-mates free at the back post his cross is blocked behind for a corner. Chelsea need half-time here...

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:45

Cunha has a go at goal this time. A dinked cross is flicked wide by the Brazilian, who is growing into this game.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:45

Cunha has the opportunity to ping a through ball into Sarabia on the break but - somewhat surpringly considering his recent form - gets it all wrong and holds a hand up in apology.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:42

Wolves are growing in confidence, with Cunha driving them forward. He finds Ait-Nouri, whose effort has the pace taken out of it on the way through to Sanchez.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:41

Yellow Card André Trindade da Costa Neto

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:39

Caicedo seems to be in some pain after a tangle with Andre just inside his own half. He is receiving some attention but looks fine to carry on

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:37

Wolves have switched Ait-Nouri to the right and Semedo to the left, which is causing Chelsea a few issues. Chalobah stocks out a boot as the former aims to get round the back but the flag was up in any case.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:36

With Gary Barlow in attendance, Tosin must feel like he can Rule The World right now. That was the defender's fourth goal of the season in all competitions, the most he has ever managed in a single campaign.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:35

Chelsea are on the front foot again. James' free-kick is headed clear before Caicedo's drive is blocked on the edge of the box.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:32

That opener was the fourth Premier League goal of Tosin's career and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they have all come from corners. He also scored a brace against Morecambe at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup nine days ago.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:31

Wolves look to hit back immediately and win a corner...but it comes to nothing.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:30

Textbook use of VAR! There weren't too many complaints when Tosin was initally flagged but replays show a stray Wolves leg was poking out behind him and after a couple of minutes, the goal is awarded on review.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:27

Goal Abdul-Nasir Oluwatosin Oluwadoyinsolami Adarabioyo

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:26

NEARLY A CATSTROPHE! Sa comes for the ball but a breakdown in communication sees Doherty head it past him and towards his own net. Fortunately for the visitors, it's hacked behind for a corner.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:24

Jackson pounces on an error and breaks forward but Chelsea don't take advantage of the siutation, Neto eventually going down but only met with a disadainful wave of the hand from referee Simon Hooper.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:20

An increasingly familiar sight follows - Sa goes down with a niggle, allowing his Wolves team-mates to flock to the touchline and receive tactical instruction from Pereira.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:19

SA SAVES! Palmer works a familiar shooting position from an angle inside the box but his low effort is firmly stopped by Sa down to his left.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:18

Chelsea have lost three of their last four Premier League games against Wolves but have started the faster of the two sides here, pressing energetically and sending plenty of decent deliveries into the box.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:16

Chelsea are building up in a back three consisting of James, Tosin and Chalobah. On his 100th Premier League appearance, Cucurella is spending plenty of time in midfield.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:15

Palmer goes close! The first real sight of goal falls to Chelsea's talisman, who sends a left-footed effort drifiting wide of Sa's right-hand post.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:13

There is an almighty scramble in the box as several players obstruct each other from the ball before Sa eventually claims it.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:11

Madueke sends in a couple of dangerous crosses from the right, the second of which is authoritatively claimed by Wolves stopper Sa.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:10

The returning Chalobah is straight back into Chelsea's starting XI and has made an immediate impact, with a perfectly-timed challenge on Strand Larsen denying the Wolves striker a run on goal.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:06

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, starting his first Premier League fixture since May 2023, sends in a dangerous cross that's flicked behind for another corner.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:04

Madueke sneaks in behind Ait-Nouri, who does enough to force the Blues attacker off balance as he looks ready to shoot.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:03

Chelsea win an early corner, which is flicked on by Chalobah but Jackson can't get any power on his shot at the back post.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:02

Palmer gets us underway...

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:01

The two sides emerge with both badly in need of a win. The Blues are favoured to get it by our win probability rating, with a 63.3% chance, while Wolves are only given a 17.9% shot at victory. We're just about ready to go at the Bridge.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

19:53

Pereira also makes changes to the side that lost at St James' Park on Wednesday, with Gomes, Hwang and Guedes dropping out for Semedo, Cunha and Sarabia. He will hope a much-changed performance follows.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

19:53

Enzo Maresca is forced into five changes, as Colwill, Fernandez and Lavia miss out. Acheampong and Sancho also drop to the bench, with James, Tosin, Dewsbury-Hall and Neto coming in alongside Chalobah, who was recalled from Crystal Palace last week.

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
