Chelsea's most important signing in January transfer window is already being discussed
Chelsea are still considering their options in the centre-back department this month with a number of possibilities on the table, football.london understands.
Wesley Fofana could be missing for the remainder of the season with a serious hamstring injury, while Benoit Badiashile is set to be absent for another month at the very least with a similar - although seemingly less serious - problem. With the two Frenchmen being sidelined, it has left Enzo Maresca fairly short of options at the back.
Levi Colwill is Chelsea's outstanding centre-back, so it has been all about finding the right partner for him. At the weekend, Josh Acheampong made the first Premier League start of his short career, where he shone alongside Colwill as Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. While Acheampong was superb at Selhurst Park, he is still a kid - at just 18-years-old - and applying too much pressure to him now could have a detrimental affect on the teenager in the long run.

That is why Chelsea are still considering their options. Said options include recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace - something that is being discussed internally at Stamford Bridge, football.london understands. Another is signing a new centre-back before the end of the transfer window with a number of names on a list for the Blues.
One of them, and the one that has been spoken about more than the rest is Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. Having left Chelsea in 2021 to join the Eagles, the west Londoners have always kept a close eye on the 24-year-old defender. However, there is a general acceptance that trying to convince Palace to sell their star defender in the mid-season transfer window will be difficult.
Guehi won't come cheap, either. In the summer transfer window, Newcastle United saw multiple offers rebuffed for the England international - with the highest one at a reported £65million. That is what makes a deal for Guehi this month even more complicated: the price the south London club would demand for his services.
Chalobah seems like the more sensible option; the smoother deal to get done. Adding the 25-year-old to the Blues' ranks could be the smartest piece of business the club do all month. The Cobham graduate has been in outstanding form for Palace, who will not want to see his loan spell cut short.
