Cheltenham Town have completed the signing of right-back Darragh Power from League of Ireland Premier Division club Waterford FC on an 18-month deal.

As exclusively revealed by Gloucestershire Live on Sunday, the 24-year-old has already trained with his new teammates and he will be eligible for Saturday's home match against league leaders Walsall, but he cannot feature at Port Vale on New Year's Day.

Power, who is from Kilmacthomas, made 142 appearances for Waterford, scoring six goals, after graduating from the academy.

He played for the club’s Under-17s squad before progressing to the Under-19s, who he helped win the 2019 SSE Airtricity Under-19 League trophy.

Power becomes Cheltenham's first new addition of the January transfer window, with Brentford attacking prospect Ashley Hay also set to join on loan until the end of the season.

Here, Conor Doherty who has supported Waterford FC since 2012, provides his insight into what Power will offer his new club:

How would you sum up Darragh Power's 2024 season?

I'd describe his 2024 season as a season where he proved himself as the best right-back in the league. He was also ultra-consistent, only missing one game in the league season.

How would you describe him as a player?

If there was one word to describe Darragh, it would be 'warrior'. Watching him play for the last few years, it feels like I've rarely watch him lose a duel. He never stops running and he's great both defensively and going forward.

What sort of impact do you think he can make in League Two?

I think he could have a massive impact in League Two. Every game in that league is a dogfight and he has been in a load of relegation and promotion dogfights in his short career so far. He can bring that experience to England and really shine.

Any interesting facts or highlights you'd like to mention?

I'd like to point out Darragh's duels stats. In September (second last month of the season), Darragh had over 184 duels won. While the League of Ireland seemingly hasn't updated that stat since, you can only assume he was able to reach over 200 duels won this season while playing in a team which weren't playing well for the second half of the season. Darragh was a real bright spark during this period of the season and hopefully he does well in England.

How is former Cheltenham Town defender Grant Horton doing at Waterford?

It was a season of two halves for him last season. First half of the season he was immense, then second half of the season there were mistakes creeping into his game. But hopefully with the upcoming season he is able to stamp out those mistakes and regain his form for us. There are a lot of question marks around who's going to be starting centre-back for us this season, but I'd consider Horton a shoe-in for the first spot at least.
