Cheltenham Town Women’s historic FA Cup run ended in the Fourth Round after a narrow 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was a record home attendance of 576 at Kayte Lane for Tom Davies’ side and after a goalless first half the tie was still firmly in the balance.

The deadlock was broken on the hour as Amber Hughes breached Mia Smith’s goal with a long range effort.

Dan McNamara’s side’s place in the last 16 was sealed just under 20 minutes from time as Beth Merrick slotted past Smith to double the visitors’ lead.

It was an expectant crowd in Bishop's Cleeve, as Cheltenham took part in their first ever fourth round match, against a Wolves side who reached the fifth round last season.

The club's previous attendance record was their Southern League Premier Division match against London Bees at Whaddon Road in March 2023, which saw a crowd of 406.

After an even start, Wolves grew into the game, and the first chance of note fell to Amber Hughes, but her effort was blocked well by Holly Finch.

Moments later captain Emily Owen defended well off two free kicks for Dan McNamara’s side. Down the other end Doris Greenwood broke away after Henna Butcher found her way through the Wolves midfield.

Butcher kept up some remarkable pressure on Wolves keeper Bec Thomas, and forced her into giving the ball away, which led to Butcher just striking her effort over the bar. Merrick tried her luck at Mia Smith’s goal but it was saved well by the Robins keeper.

It was more of the same in the second half as the game became increasingly end-to-end, as Ffion Llewellyn had a free-kick caught by Thomas.

Despite the difference in league standing, with Wolves sitting second in the Northern Premier Division, and Cheltenham sitting ninth in the Southern Premier Division, it was a very competitive contest in Gloucestershire.

Llewellyn kept up her fantastic defending in the second period as she kept Hughes out twice with some last ditch blocks, and Finch did the same to deny Merrick minutes later.

Wolves did however break the deadlock 62 minutes in, as Hughes struck from range, and caught out Smith to give the visitors a crucial lead.

On 70 minutes, a free kick went narrowly over Smith’s bar, and moments later Merrick was there to double McNamara’s side’s lead, as her powerful shot was enough to beat Smith.

That was all she wrote for Cheltenham, as they bow out of the competition after reaching the last 32 for the first time in their history. As for Wolves, it’s a foray into the fifth round for a second consecutive season.

Last season they got to the last 16, and eventually lost 4-1 to Women’s Super League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

They will find out who they will get, when the fifth round draw takes place at 6:30pm on Monday, on the Adobe Women’s FA Cup YouTube Channel.
