Chris Davies confirms Birmingham City transfer plan after Dion Sanderson's exit
Chris Davies has confirmed Birmingham City are searching for a direct replacement for Dion Sanderson this month after letting the defender join Blackburn Rovers on loan.
Ex-Blues captain Sanderson has reunited with John Eustace at Ewood Park after falling out of favour under Davies. The centre-back has only played two minutes of League One football since August having dropped below Krystian Bielik, Christoph Klarer and Ben Davies in the pecking order.
Blues manager Davies explained: “I said to Dion that ultimately he wants more game time and as the season went on he wasn’t going to get that here as one of our first choice centre-backs, so if the right opportunity came up for him to go and play then we would look into that. That’s why he’s gone.”
Asked whether Blues want to sign a new centre-back this month, Davies added: “Absolutely, that’s something we will need.”
The club are expected to sign German defender Phil Neumann, but it’s unclear whether they will bring him to England this month or wait until his contract at Hannover 96 expires in the summer.
If Blues don’t sign Neumann now, Davies and the club’s recruitment team will have to look elsewhere for another centre-back.
