Chris Davies disagrees with Wayne Rooney about Jay Stansfield after Birmingham City goal glut
Chris Davies hailed Jay Stansfield ‘a natural goalscorer’ after Birmingham City’s record signing scored for the fourth consecutive League One match.
Stansfield netted a penalty against Burton Albion to set Blues on their way to a 2-0 victory on Boxing Day. In doing so, Stansfield scored for the fourth league game on the spin and now has eight goals in his last eight matches – and 14 across all competitions since re-joining Blues in the summer.
Whilst the debate over Stansfield’s best position is still ongoing, it is clear the 22-year-old has a knack of sniffing out chances. Former Blues boss Wayne Rooney once said Stansfield isn’t a natural goalscorer, but Davies says that some of the forward’s recent goals prove that he is.

“I think he’s a natural goalscorer,” said Davies. “There’s a couple of goals recently that tell you that. His goal against Barnsley at the back-post from the corner and the goal the other night at Crawley to arrive in there.

“I’m playing him just off the left side so he’s having to make these runs into the goalscoring positions so he’s definitely a natural finisher.”
Stansfield’s 12 league goals have come in just 15 games, making him the most prolific player per 90 minutes in the third tier. With Stockport loanee Louie Barry – who is the league’s current top scorer – due to return to parent club Aston Villa in January, Stansfield is the favourite for the Golden Boot.
Davies added: “Jay’s enthusiasm and energy, fans will always warm to a player like that anyway, because he runs, he works, he’s just infectious, and then he’s got quality. He’s a dangerous player who is always looking to see a gap and use it.
“He had a lot of time to wait with the penalty because of the treatment to the player that was down but he took it well and it was another good performance from Jay.”
