Chris Davies has revealed influential duo Krystian Bielik and Jay Stansfield missed Birmingham City’s rout at Wigan Athletic with minor knocks.

Alfie May took centre stage to net a brace in Blues’ 3-0 win at The Brick Community Stadium with Willum Willumsson scoring the other goal. Meanwhile, Bielik’s replacement at right-back Ethan Laird had a hand in all three goals.

Stansfield was withdrawn late on in the draw with Stockport during New Year’s Day and wasn’t in Blues’ squad at Wigan. Blues captain Bielik was also battered and bruised at Edgeley Park.

Speaking after the win at Wigan, Davies said: “Bielik has got a knock that he picked up in the last game. He won’t be too long but he wasn’t available for this one. Jay was a similar one. It was just an issue that meant he wasn’t available for this one but he won’t be long.”

Davies could opt to rest Bielik and Stansfield for the next fortnight with two cup games on the horizon. Blues entertain Lincoln City in the third round of the FA Cup next weekend before travelling to Swindon for the last-16 of the Vertu Trophy the following Tuesday.

Blues, who have taken 53 points from their first 23 games, can take a breather from the breathless League One title race having reclaimed top spot from Wycombe Wanderers. The Chairboys conceded late to draw to Blackpool on Saturday to surrender first place to Blues once again.

Davies commented: “It’s an exceptional return and I’m delighted with the number of points we’ve got. I still haven’t looked at the league table and I don’t intend to because we don’t need to, it’s just about us picking up the points game by game.”
