Birmingham City are braced for bad news on Lee Buchanan after the defender was stretchered off during the 0-0 draw with Blackpool – and Chris Davies has also confirmed injuries to Christoph Klarer and Emil Hansson.

Buchanan went down with a knee injury in the fourth minute with what appeared to be a knee injury and was swiftly taken to hospital. Hansson was withdrawn towards the end of the first half and Klarer was substituted in the 58th minute.

Blues manager Davies said of Buchanan: “There’s no definitive news but it didn’t look good. I’ve seen a picture of it and it doesn’t look good. He was in a lot of pain.

“It’s a real shame for someone who has worked so hard to get back to fitness, to have another big setback like that is really disappointing. We will have to see how he goes and obviously he will have a scan in the next few days.”

Hansson was making his first start in more than two months due to injury and didn’t reach half-time. The Swedish winger could now be set for another spell on the sidelines.

“Emil has another muscular injury, the severity I don’t know. It was innocuous, just jogging back into position I think and he felt something.

“It’s disappointing because we had a little flurry of injuries that we seemed to come through but we’ve picked some up today. Christoph Klarer got a knock as well. That’s why we’ve got the squad.”

Blues were playing their third game of the week after victories over Crawley Town on Monday and Burton Albion on Thursday. Trips to Stockport County and Wigan Athletic next week will take Blues’ festive fixture count to five in just 13 days.

“It’s a lot of football,” added Davies. “We’ve played 29 games already and we’re not even into the New Year yet so that’s a lot of football to play. From my point of view, I’m not going to criticise the players in any way because I think they’ve been on a great run – eight wins in a row – and unfortunately today it wasn’t enough.

“I didn’t see a player that wasn’t 100 percent committed and focussed, they were trying to give everything they could. On the day it wasn’t to be.”
