Birmingham City are in dialogue with Romelle Donovan in a bid to formulate a new plan for the talented teenager after his failed loan spell at Burton Albion.

Donovan returned to Blues last month having only made nine appearances for the Brewers who are bottom of the League One table. The 18-year-old’s final outing for Burton saw him register his first professional goal in a 5-2 win at Northampton in the Vertu Trophy.

There will be takers for Donovan, who has earned call-ups to the England under-18 side in the past, if Blues opt to loan him out again this month. A permanent exit cannot be ruled out either with Premier League clubs sniffing around Donovan throughout his youth career.

Giving an update, Blues manager Chris Davies told BirminghamLive: “We’re still speaking to Romelle and his support network around what’s the best next step for him because he’s a talented player who has come through the academy, we have a duty of care towards him to get it right and get his future right.

“He’s obviously come back from his loan and has been back at the club training with the under-21s, so we’ll see how the next few weeks go with that.”

Should Blues opt to play Donovan in a competitive game they then wouldn’t be able to loan him out to another club. FIFA rules state: “Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs.”

As Donovan has already played for Burton, an appearance for Blues would prevent him from playing for another club this season.
