Birmingham City won’t risk Tomoki Iwata against Huddersfield Town unless the Japanese midfielder is ‘completely right’.

Iwata has missed Blues’ last three matches due to an injury sustained in training after the FA Cup victory over Lincoln City. In addition to Iwata, Paik Seung-ho, Willum Willumsson and Emil Hansson were absent for Blues’ 1-1 draw with promotion rivals Wrexham on Thursday.

A trip to fourth-placed Huddersfield awaits League One leaders Blues on Tuesday and Davies will hope to call on Iwata – but the 27-year-old won’t be risked with Marc Leonard and Taylor Gardner-Hickman proving to be capable deputies in midfield.

Asked about Iwata’s chances of playing against Huddersfield, Davies said: “Tomoki is day by day. It’s just one of those little injuries that is taking a little bit of time to get completely right. What we don’t want to do is make him worse. He’s a key player for us. Hopefully. We’ll see how he goes this week.”

Skipper Krystian Bielik has helped out in midfield during Blues’ last two games and will continue to be an option for Davies until Iwata and Paik return.

Davies said: “He’s a defensive midfielder by trade that I play at centre-back, I prefer him as a centre-back and I see that as his position for us. He’s another one who is just coming back from injury so hasn’t played a lot of minutes himself, so he could probably only do that 10-minute cameo that he provided on the weekend.

“He’s a definite option in there because of his experience playing in defensive midfield, but I do see his strongest position as a centre-back. It’s good to have versatility considering the amount of injuries we’ve got in that position at the moment.”
