Chris Davies won’t remember much from Birmingham City’s narrow FA Cup victory over Lincoln City – but he isn’t in a hurry to forget Lyndon Dykes’ belter.

Dykes settled the game in the 77th minute with a stupendous half-volley from 25 yards after flicking the ball over his marker’s head. Ayumu Yokoyama gave Blues a first minute lead and Jovon Makama reduced the arrears in stoppage time from the penalty spot.

“It’s one of those games where you won’t remember a lot about it but you’ll remember that goal for a long time and that’s football,” Davies reflected. “We haven’t had too many of those that I can think of that have been such memorable goals this season but that would be up there. Individual ability and just a great goal.”

Scotland international Dykes has been on the peripheries for much of this season, forced to watch Jay Stansfield and Alfie May plunder the goals in the league, and make do with the odd start here and there. Dykes has only started five games in League One, with a further 13 appearances off the bench.

The 29-year-old has scored more goals in the Championship for Queens Park Rangers this season than he has for Blues in League One, but he has made a habit of scoring in the cups. Dykes now has three goals in three cup outings for Blues.

Davies said: “Lyndon, like every player, wants to play as much as he can and he’s played a really important role this season. He’s started some, he’s come on in some, but he’s tactically very good. He plays international football and it’s a bit more tactical. If you have to adjust anything on the pitch he’s got great awareness tactically. I’ve no issue playing him as a 10 because he can drop in and link and he defends well.

“I say to the players that ultimately players pick the team. I name the team but their performances, attitudes, behaviours and what they produce ultimately picks the team. So if you’re on the fringes and not starting games, you have to make it happen and you can only do that with your performances. Lyndon’s goal was a big moment for him and hopefully he can kick on from that.

“He’s an important player and I’m sure he’s aware of that. If he hasn’t started some games, I’m sure he’s frustrated but he’s coming on and making a big impact. He’ll have a massive role to play between now and the end of the season.”
