Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy shows Leicester City are “making things up as they go” in a scathing take on the club’s hierarchy.

Former Blackburn and Celtic forward turned pundit Sutton has questioned the strategy at the top of the club after Steve Cooper was sacked and van Nistelrooy was appointed at the end of last month. The Dutchman was not in contention for the job in the summer, but four successful matches as interim Manchester United boss saw City turn to him.

Sutton believes that Cooper was dismissed after just 12 games because City see themselves as above the relegation battle. The club were 16th, one point above the bottom three, when Cooper was sacked.

“It is interesting, the Leicester appointment,” Sutton told spaceportsweden.com. “Let's get it right. Leicester are sort of making things up as they go along, aren't they, in terms of that appointment?

“Because would Ruud van Nistelrooy have been appointed, or was he even in the mix for the Leicester job at the start of the season? I think not. And then all of a sudden, he's gone in there.

“He has had a little bit of experience as a manager in the Netherlands. He had a year at PSV, he won a cup as well. I wish him well.

“He's actually had a really good start. I mean West Ham actually had the better of the game. They had the better of the game, but Leicester found a way to win and then a point against Brighton was a really good point.

“I thought Leicester were one of those teams where they've come up, and maybe because of their pretty recent Premier League history, felt that they should be higher in the table, hence sacking Steve Cooper.”

Four points from three matches under van Nistelrooy means City are now two points clear of relegation, but have dropped a place to 17th. If Ipswich beat Newcastle on Saturday, they will need to beat Wolves on Sunday to ensure they’re not in the drop zone at Christmas.
