Salford City are potentially just one match away from reaching the Football League for the very first time in their history following a dramatic National League playoff semi-final win.

Following a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Eastleigh, the Manchester-based club will face North-west rivals AFC Fylde at Wembley for a chance to be promoted to League Two.

The club famously co-owned by former Manchester United legends Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt squeezed past Eastleigh this weekend after a 1-1 draw at their Moor Lane home ground.

The teams couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes so the game went to penalties.

However, Salford’s Wembley dream almost immediately turned into a nightmare as top scorer Adam Rooney spooned his kick high and wide of the target.

With the next four kicks all being dispatched, goalkeeper Chris Neal redeemed his striker’s blushes by pushing away Sam Matthews’ effort to keep the scores level at 2-2.

Both teams scored again before Salford’s Ibou Touray confidently stepped up and made the score 4-3 to the home side.

It was left to Neal to be the hero again as the keeper was able to push Chris Zebroski’s effort against the post to give his side the victory.

As the TV cameras cut to Gary Neville, the multi-time Premier League winner broke down in tears overcome by the emotion of the achievement.

A third place finish saw the club miss out on automatic promotion but the May 11th final will see Salford get second chance to go up against AFC Fylde who beat Solihull Moors 1-0 in their semi-final.

The Lancashire based side are also looking to play in the football league for the first time and will be encouraged by their 1-0 victory over Salford in the two clubs’ most recent meeting last month.

Salford are chasing a remarkable fourth promotion in five seasons following the 2014 takeover by the ‘Class of 92‘ Red Devils legends.
