We all need freshening up a bit at this time of year, and our football clubs are no different.

Some squads need a lick of paint, some need serious surgery.

There’s always room for improvement and while the January transfer window is already seeing big money change hands, you get a feeling there’s plenty more to come.

We’ve put together a must-have list for clubs as we pick out the position they really need to strengthen.

Arsenal:

It’s a long list, but their most pressing issue with probably be solved when they sell Alexis Sanchez. Henrikh Mkhitaryan should ease the pain but another striker now Theo Walcott has gone is much needed.

What they need: A new number 10 and a striker

Who is available: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund) Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)

Who is likely to come: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)

Who has joined: Konstantinos Mavropanos (PAS Giannina)

Bournemouth:

If we’re being harsh, the Cherries squad has a lot a number of top end Championship players playing above their level. Their backline needs sprucing up and its age reduced.

What they need: Younger defender

Who is available: Martin Terrier (Strasbourg) Danny Ings (Bournemouth)

Who is likely to come: Lewis Cook (Leeds United)

Who has joined: No-one.

Brighton:

The word of the street down at the AMEX is that if Brighton sign a good striker in the window, they’ll be alright. The lowest scorers in the Premier League need more than Glenn Murray.

What they need: A new striker

Who is available: Moussa Dembele (Celtic) Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Who is likely to come: James Collins (West Ham)

Who has joined: Warren O’Hora (Bohemians)

Burnley:

It’s a case of numbers more than a particular position for Burnley, their recent dropped points in part down to injuries and a small squad. They could do with more creativity, a winger with Robbie Brady out for the season is top priority.

What they need: A winger and a powerful forward

Who is available: Georges-Kevin N’Koudou (Tottenham), Solly March (Brighton)

Who is likely to come: Karl Toko Ekambi (Angers)

Who has joined: No-one

Unsettled: Andy Carroll is ‘unable to train amid Chelsea interest’ according to some reports
Unsettled: Andy Carroll is ‘unable to train amid Chelsea interest’ according to some reports

Chelsea:

The Blues need a forward, but not short term thinking like a deal for Andy Carroll. They need to lift the burden off a struggling Alvaro Morata, but shouldn’t go down the route of finding a forward who isn’t cup tied for the Champions League.

What they need: A forward

Who is available: Andy Carroll (West Ham) Alex Sandro (Juventus)

Who is likely to come: Andy Carroll (West Ham)

Who has joined: Ross Barkley (Everton)

Crystal Palace:

While it would be temping for Roy Hodgson to leave things just as they are, the Eagles could do with trying to offload Christian Benteke, if they can. Celtic’s Moussa Dembele could fit. They also want a new keeper.

What they need: Goalkeeper and a striker.

Who is available: Karl Toko Ekambi (Angers) Vicente Guaita (Getafe)

Who is likely to come: David Button (Fulham)

Who has joined: No-one.

Everton

The signing of Theo Walcott will add another dimension, as will Cent Tosun, but they must sort their defence out next. Phil Jagielka is reliable but aging, so a centre-back should sit atop their list along with a left-back.

What they need: A left-back

Who is available: Karl Toko Ekambi (Angers) Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Who is likely to come: Juan Bernat (Bayern Munich)

Who has joined: Cenk Tusan (Besiktas) Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

Huddersfield:

The Terriers should be done now, most of their budget spent in the summer. Although they do need to improve the supply line to their forwards, and a winger would help with Dutch flyer Rajiv Van La Parra their only recognised wide man.

What they need: A winger

Who is available: Solly March (Brighton)

Who is likely to come: No-one.

Who has joined: Alex Pritchard (Norwich City) Terence Kongolo (Monaco)

Leicester City:

The Foxes seem to want to sell two strikers and use the money to get in a better one. Fans still feel the centre of midfield is where they need to be looking to improve things.

What they need: A striker

Who is available: Kevin Gameiro (Atletico Madrid) Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Who is likely to come: Bouna Sarr (Marseille)

Who has joined: Fousseni Diabate (Gazalec Ajaccio)

Time for action: Liverpool should look to sign Simon Mignolet’s replacement this window
Time for action: Liverpool should look to sign Simon Mignolet’s replacement this window

Liverpool:

They’re looking great going forward, even without you-know-who. They’ve solved their biggest problem already in signing Virgin Van Dijk so surely the next step is to actually take the plunge and buy a number one who’s fit to keep goal in front of the Kop?

What they need: A goalkeeper

Who is available: Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray)

Who is likely to come: No-one.

Who has joined: Virgil van Dijk (Southampton)

Manchester United

If we consider the Sanchez deal as good as done, United now seriously need to start looking at the centre of their defence. Chris Smalling isn’t title winning quality, Phil Jones is good when he’s fully fit but with Eric Bailly months away and Victor Lindelof not progressing as quickly as hoped, Jose Mourinho may need to act.

What they need: A striker and a centre-back

Who is available: Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Who is likely to come: Alexis Sanchez

Who has joined: No-one.

Manchester City

With Jesus and Aguero having injury issues, and Sanchez so heavily linked before City pull out of the deal, it’s clear they want another forward. Danny Rose, the Spurs left-back, continues to be linked despite Fabian Delph’s great form.

What they need: A striker

Who is available: Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Who is likely to come: No-one

Who has joined: No-one

Newcastle United

The Toon Army’s record of signing strikers over the past few years is laughable and they need to address that if they are to steer clear of trouble. Mike Ashley should pull out all the stops and try to get Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi on loan.

What they need: A striker

Who is available: Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea) Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Who is likely to come: Kenedy (Chelsea)

Who has joined: No-one

Toon target: Michy Batshuayi is a must for Newcastle as they aim to improve their terrible attack

Southampton

The Saints need a lot work, but at least they’ve got cash to make it happen. First of all they need a centre-back to replace Van Dijk, but also shouldn’t be shy in spending on a striker. They score nowhere near enough goals.

What they need: A striker and a defender

Who is available: Kenedy (Chelsea) Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Who is likely to come: Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Who has joined: No-one

Stoke City:

Some Stoke fans unhappy with Paul Lambert’s underwhelming appointing would argue they need another manager already but what their forward three badly lack legs and an attacker with energy and end product.

What they need: Pacey attackers

Who is available: Solly March (Brighton)

Who is likely to come: Oumar Niasse (Everton)

Who has joined: Moussa Niakate (Paris FC) Moritz Bauer (Rubin Kazan)

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg)

Swansea City

The Swans needs a quick pick-me-up and usually that comes in the form of a forward player who can make something happen. It appears they are looking abroad, when maybe a quick-settle buy from the Premier League would be more sensible.

What they need: Attackers

Who is available: Oumar Niasse (Everton)

Who is likely to come: Kevin Gameiro (Atletico Madrid) Nicolas Gaitan (Atletico Madrid)

Who has joined: No-one

Tottenham:

Spurs don’t seem overly keen to buy this window, but that won’t stop us speculating. A left-back with the Danny Rose situation not resolved would be interesting, and maybe a young striker happy to bide his time.

What they need: A patient forward

Who is available: Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Who is likely to come: No-one.

Who has joined: No-one.

Ful-ly committed: Tom Cairney says he ‘loves playing at Fulham’ and won’t be moving to West Brom
Ful-ly committed: Tom Cairney says he ‘loves playing at Fulham’ and won’t be moving to West Brom

West Brom

A lot depends on if they keep hold on to Jonny Evans. If they do then the target needs to be freshening up the centre of their midfielder. Shame Fulham’s Tom Cairney seems reluctant to move to the Hawthorns.

What they need: A creative midfielder

Who is available: Moussa Dembele (Celtic)

Who is likely to come: Oumar Niasse (Everton)

Who has joined: No-one

Watford

If Chelsea do manage to wrestle Richarlison away from Vicarage Road, they’ve got to have a suitable replacement lined up for their playmaker. The defence has also got to be a big concern for Marco Silva.

What they need: A defender

Who is available: James Collins (West Ham) Joao Mario (Inter)

Who is likely to come: Antonin Barak (Udinese)

Who has joined: No-one

West Ham

Linked with the world and his wife this window, it’s easier to explain where West Ham don’t need reinforcements. Central midfield is where David Moyes seems to be most keen to add a body or two now they’re scoring goals.

What they need: Midfield and a striker

Who is available: Moussa Dembele (Celtic) Harry Arter (Bournemouth)

Who is likely to come: Antonin Barak (Udinese)

Who has joined: No-one
