Club legend Fonte on survival chances: 'It's now or never for Southampton'
SAINTS legend José Fonte has issued a rallying cry to his old club, insisting their Premier League survival chances hinge on the next two games.
Fonte, 41, believes the St Mary's side must beat both AFC Bournemouth and Brighton in back-to-back home games to be able to avoid the drop.
Saints sit on nine points from 24 matches and are 10 points off of Wolves in safety after beating Ipswich 2-1 at Portman Road last time out.
Club hero and former captain Fonte, who made 288 appearances for Saints from League One to the Europa League, admits time is running out.
Speaking to BoyleSports, he said: "I think it’s now or never for Southampton. They beat Ipswich Town and if they can beat AFC Bournemouth and Brighton at home they will have a chance.
"If they get to 15 points they can start to show they might have enough to stay up. It’s now or never in these two games to show they can fight and I really hope they can do that, if they don’t then things might become too hard to achieve."
Fonte returned to St Mary's for the club's charity match between Russell Martin XI and Saints legends on October 13 - which ended in a 4-4 draw.
Speaking after the match, he labelled his choice to sign for Saints in January 2010 as: "The best decision I made in my life."
