Colls stun leaders Widnes on the road in landmark win
Atherton Collieries took all three points from NPL West league leaders Widnes following a thrilling 2-0 win at the Halton Stadium, to remain within a point of escaping the drop zone.
It was a positive start from both teams as they both created plenty of chances throughout the first half, but both likewise defended well.
Sharif Deans had the first shot of the game after some good football by Widnes, but his effort was sent just over the bar.
Collieries’ best chance of the half came through Matty Bryan, who crossed into the box before curling just wide of the post after collecting the rebound.
Then, just before half time, Aaron Dwyer floated a perfect ball in from a corner which allowed Calen Gallagher to head home at the near post, putting Colls in front.
With the celebrations from that opener still to subside, Collieries doubled their lead within moments through a powerful shot across goal from Scott Bakkor, giving the Stripes a comfortable margin at the interval.
Alongside the attacking display, Sol Honor and defenders Toby Oliver, Alex Doyle and Gallagher all impressed throughout as the Colls became the first team to claim a clean sheet in Halton this campaign.
The second half showed nothing much to separate the two teams, but with the clock ticking, Michael Clegg’s men held on to their lead, leaving the pitch with a hard-earned three points.
Colls are back on home soil on Saturday when they host Stafford Rangers (3pm).
Rangers sit three places above Colls in the league table in 16th spot - but just a single point better off.
Another victory for the Stripes would see them leapfrog Stafford and further aid their bid to beat the drop.
