Birmingham City have completed the signing of Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell on loan for the rest of the season.

Dowell becomes Blues’ second signing of the January transfer window following the addition of experienced centre-back Grant Hanley. Blues have also bagged Hannover 96 defender Phil Neumann on a pre-contract agreement for next season.

Dowell has made 16 appearances for Rangers this season, but only three of them have been starts. The 27-year-old moved to Ibrox in the summer of 2023 at the end of his contract with Norwich where he was captained by Hanley.

Blues have enjoyed shopping at Rangers this season and Dowell becomes the third player to join from the Scottish giants. Dowell will be reunited with ex-Gers teammates Ben Davies – who is also on loan at Blues from Ibrox – and Scott Wright.

The majority of Dowell’s football has come in the number 10 position, but he can also play in a slightly deeper midfield role. Blues already have Willum Willumsson and Fulham loanee Luke Harris as options in Dowell’s favoured position. Dowell takes Blues’ loan contingent to five – the maximum number an EFL club can name in a matchday squad.

Dowell has only made 24 league appearances for Rangers in the last 18 months, but he arrives at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park with plenty of pedigree. He boasts 145 appearances in the Championship and Premier League with boyhood club Everton, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Derby County, Wigan and Norwich.
