HARRISON JONES has committed his long-term future to Sunderland by signing a new contract with the club.

Jones, who is the current captain of the Under-21s team, has penned a deal to 2026, with the option of a further year beyond that.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder first joined the Academy of Light at the age of just six, and has featured for Sunderland at every youth level.

He made his first-team debut in this season’s Carabao Cup defeat at Preston, and has been named as a substitute on nine occasions this term.

He has been a key figure in Sunderland’s Under-21s team, scoring one goal and claiming four assists in his eight Premier League 2 appearances.

“I am delighted to sign this new deal,” said Jones. “This is my boyhood club and I can't thank the staff and my team-mates enough for their continuous support.

“Making my debut was a really proud moment, but I know the hard work doesn't stop so I can continue reaching those levels.

“It was only two years ago I spent the full season injured and didn't feature at all. To push on from that and make my debut was a real privilege.

“I know the hard work doesn't stop there. I want to keep reaching new levels to earn more opportunities in the squad. This is my home, this has been my life for nearly 15 years now. I'm excited to see what the future holds.”

Jones has been linked with a possible loan move in the second half of the season, and it remains to be seen whether he heads away from Wearside to gain playing experience or remains as part of Regis Le Bris’ first-team training squad.

“We are delighted to agree terms on a new contract with Harrison,” said academy manager Robin Nicholls. “He is an excellent young man with a bright future in football ahead of him.

“We retain a firm belief in his ability to progress and make an impact on our first team here at the club.

“Since returning from a significant injury that kept him sidelined for an extended period, his application and progression have impressed all the staff, and he has become a role model for all of the players in our academy.”
