Controversial former Reading chief executive departs Saudi Arabia after 18 months
Former Reading chief executive, Ron Gourlay, has confirmed that he will depart Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli next month.
The vastly-experienced businessman has over 25 years in football, making his name in a five-year stint at Chelsea.
Arriving with the Royals in 2017, his time was an unmitigated disaster, linked heavily to high wages and a disenfranchised staff.
His former colleague at Reading, Brian Tevreden, said: "Ron Gourlay wanted to sit in my chair. That was the difference. He made the calls on renewing contracts for players and then after a year cancelled the contracts- financially it’s unbelievable. The other thing is he brought players in on big wages. That was not my idea, and I was not happy with that. I can go on and on."
Al-Ahli confirm Ron Gourlay will leave his position as CEO. He will continue until April before departing.🟢 pic.twitter.com/4ERV4nNUdL

The Scot was with Championship side West Brom from 2022 until 2023- another side with a fanbase frustrated with a Chinese owner at the time.
In Saudi for 18 months, Gourlay is stepping down in April.
The board placed on record their 'deep appreciation' for his 'outstanding contribution.'
Gourlay added: "I fully appreciate the fans' passion and desire to see their club at the top, and that every decision made during my tenure was motivated by the club's best interest, with a focus on building a strong and sustainable foundation."
