Leading bookmakers have closed the odds on Derby County appointing John Eustace as their new manager - but it could come at a costly price to the Rams.

SkyBet have withdrawn their runners and riders for the job with Blackburn Rovers boss Eustace a clear favourite to take over at Pride Park.

It has however emerged that Rovers will demand a full compensation package if they are to let their manager leave at this stage of the season.

Journalist Alan Nixon has stated that the amount that will be demanded is a whopping £750,000, and it remains to be seen whether the Pride Park board will shell out that kind of sum when an unattached manager could be attained instead.

Nixon stated on X: "Rovers have Eustace tied down to a contract for the next 18 months as he celebrates one year in charge at Ewood Park.

"And although Eustace may privately be keen on a return to Derby where he was a favourite he will cost the Rams a fortune.
Derby have worked within a tight budget since coming out of administration and the asking price for a new boss may be a problem to them."

Rovers have lost four out of their last five games, but Eustace's stock has risen considerably this season given the job he has done at Ewood Park.

Blackburn beat Derby 4-2 on the opening day of the season and they are currently in with a great shout of finishing in the top six with a chance at promotion to the Premier League.

It is understood that Lee Carsley, whose name shot to the top of the bookies' odds in the last 24 hours, has not had any contact over the position and is an unlikely contender given his job with England under-21s.

The news comes after Derby sacked Warne after a run of seven straight defeats in the Championship left them in the bottom three. He left the club with his assistant Richie Barker after being informed of his fate in a meeting after training.
