County frustration over for frozen-out defender Seberry after loan move
JOSH Seberry’s Newport County AFC frustration is over after the Irish defender joined Weston-super-Mare on loan for the rest of the season.
The 20-year-old will play the second half of the campaign in National League South after being frozen out at the Exiles.
The move effectively means that Seberry’s County career is over after he joined in the summer of 2023 on a two-year deal after impressing then manager Graham Coughlan on trial.
The physical defender, a centre-back who can also play on the right, was a surprise hit in the opening months of last season when he proved to be a fast learner.
Seberry featured in every matchday squad of the first three months of the season until he suffered a horror leg break at Notts County on his 12th appearance at the end of October.
The defender, who had been with the academy at Shelbourne in the League of Ireland, featured in pre-season under new head coach Nelson Jardim.
However, after the transfer window had closed he was told that he wasn’t in the club’s plans and even a crisis at the heart of the defence in September didn’t lead to a return to the fray.
Seberry was an unused substitute on three occasions but will now get a chance to catch the eye with Weston, who also have the currently injured former County midfielder James Waite on their books, before hunting a new club at the end of the season.
“Everyone at Newport County would like to wish Josh all the very best during his loan spell at the Optima Stadium,” read a County statement.
Weston are one place outside the play-offs in the National League South after a winless streak that goes back to the end of November.
Manager Scott Bartlett said: "Josh is a big strong player with a fantastic attitude, he comes in at a good time for us and we thank Newport for their help."
