County sign third goalkeeper after former Swans stopper returns to hometown club
NEWPORT County AFC have signed a third goalkeeper after bringing back former academy youngster and Swansea prospect Lewis Webb.
The 23-year-old, who went to St Julian’s Primary School and Coleg Gwent, joins Nick Townsend and Jacob Carney as an option.
After already linking up with the squad before January as a free agent, he will be available for tonight’s League Two game against AFC Wimbledon at Rodney Parade and that will lead to increased interest in the team announcement at 6.45pm.
Stalwart Townsend is out of contact this summer and has been the subject of online speculation about a departure, just as Bryn Morris was before his move to Harrogate.
Webb, meanwhile, will aim to make the grade in the Football League after leaving Swansea last summer.
The former Wales Under-19, 20 and 21 ‘keeper had spells on loan at Shelbourne in Ireland and in the Cymru Premier with Aberystwyth and Caernarfon.
Webb started his youth career at Cardiff City then moved to Newport until he was 16 and earned a Swansea deal after featuring for Merthyr Town.
“Having spent time here in the academy at under-15 and under-16 level, it feels fantastic to return to a place I know so well,” he said.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity ahead and can’t wait to push on and continue developing my career with Newport County.”
On his Linkedin page, Webb states: “I am a ‘modern day’ goalkeeper who can play out from the back using both feet to play through the lines or play the ball long if required.
“I consider myself a consummate professional on and off the field and also a commanding presence in and around the box.”
