Coventry City boss looks close to home to boost numbers with transfer trigger option
Frank Lampard has revealed he’s set to trigger Coventry City’s recall options for midfield duo Jack Burroughs and Ryan Howley who are both on season-long loans in Scotland.
The Sky Blues boss says the club are looking to formalise the return of 23-year-old Burroughs from Scottish Premier side Kilmarnock as well as 21-year-old Howley from Championship outfit Ayr United this month.
Asked if he’s had chance to assess how they pair have been getting on north of the border and whether City are minded to bring them back at the halfway stage of their initial loan agreements, Lampard told CoventryLive: “We’re in conversations about them maybe coming back now, so we’ll see and we’ll be more clear on that over the next week or so.”

Asked if that is because they are not getting the game time the club would like for their development or whether he wants them back to help his own squad, the City boss replied: “A bit of both. I think it’s a club decision, probably on those. I’m new to this (job) and if I am honest, my focus has been on the squad that I’ve got here every day. But I’m aware of it and there’s a positive to me seeing those players and what they can give to us.”
He added: “We need training players, too, and I like young players in the team; that’s something we want to show, so that could be something we commit more to over the next week or so.”
Versatile performer Burroughs has made just three starts and nine from the bench for the Scottish Premier club in the league, while making two starts in the Europa Conference League. The 23-year-old can play anywhere across the midfield, while last season he was utilised predominantly as a full-back/wing-back during a loan spell at Lincoln.
It’s been a similar story for attacking midfielder Howley, 21, who has made three league starts and seven from the bench for Scottish Championship club Ayr, while also making two starts and one as a sub in the Scottish Cup.
