Sheffield United and Coventry City have been hit with fines of £80,000 and £10,000 respectively following a half-time bust-up in their Sky Bet Championship game in November.

The incident at the CBS Arena saw Blades defender Anel Ahmedhodzic receive a red card just before half-time after he was seen grabbing Coventry's Norman Bassette by the throat and pushing him to the ground, allegedly in response to a comment made by the forward. As a result, players and staff from both sides were involved in what the FA dubbed a "mass confrontation" during the break.

The FA stated: "The FA alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area staff did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the tunnel area at half time."

"Sheffield United and Coventry City admitted and denied their respective charges. An independent Regulatory Commission found the charge against Coventry City to be proven and imposed these fines on the clubs after a hearing."

Despite being a man down from the 44th minute when Ahmedhodzic was sent off, the Blades were leading 2-1 until Bobby Thomas’ late strike secured a draw for Coventry, making it 2-2.

What the managers said...

United boss Chris Wilder said of the red card incident after the match: “We need to be more disciplined, evidently. I’ve got no issue with the red card, I’ve got no issue with the referee’s decision and Anel has fallen for the card trick and that puts even more pressure on us in a tight game.

“He’s going to miss three games, internally we’re going to have to deal with it. The game is tough enough in this division, especially when you’re playing a top side.

“He (Bassette) touched Anel and then Anel’s done what he’s done. We’ve been mugged really, but Anel should know better.”

City’s interim head coach Rhys Carr responded by saying: “There’s an awful lot going on in the game, there’s certain moments like that between players all throughout the game.

“Norman’s certainly spirited, he’s a winner. Not sure what was said, what he did or didn’t do, but it provoked a reaction.”
