Coventry City player ratings as Simms and Thomas-Asante combine to sink Swansea
Coventry City chalked up their fourth consecutive Championship win to close the gap to just three points to the play-off places.
First half goals from strike partners Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante put the Sky Blues on course for what was their first win at Swansea since 1950!
Simms gave Frank Lampard’s men the early lead when he hooked home from a Brandon Thomas-Asante centre to the six-yard box with just 17 minutes on the clock.
Thomas-Asante then got in the act with a brilliantly improvised first time finish from over 40 yards when a mis-placed pass in Swansea’s midfield ran to the striker who hit a looping effort over the keeper who he’d spotted off his line, sending the visitors in 2-0 up at the break.
Jack Rudoni was denied by two good saves and Thomas-Asante a decent block as City pushed for a third early in the second half as they continued to look good on their lead.

STARTING FORMATION: 3-5-2
OLIVER DOVIN: 6.5/7
Displayed good handling and kicking, and made a decent save to deny a Jay Fulton header and equaliser five minutes before the break. Didn’t have a great deal to do overall but a confident presence behind the back three.
JOEL LATIBEAUDIERE: 7
Quick to close down and alert to danger on his return to his former club where he was calm and comfortable throughout. Played his part in the clean sheet.
BOBBY THOMAS: 7
Organised the back three and read the game well but his distribution was a bit hit and miss, occasionally playing a poor pass out from the back to give it away. Excellent overall.
LIAM KITCHING: 7
Defended well with block, headers and tackles to the left of the back three where he was vocal and aggressive.
MILAN VAN EWIJK: 6.5/7
Defended when required and offered a decent outlet going forward down the right flank. Made a really good recovering tackle to deny what looked like it could have been a really good chance for an equaliser.
VICTOR TORP: 6.5/7
Battled away in midfield where he got a foot in to win possession from tackles and made effective use of the ball when he had it.
JAMIE ALLEN: 7
Patrolled the deeper midfield area, covering loads and ground and using his energy to get around the pitch and in his opponents’ faces. Unbelievable work-rate throughout, closing down and defending in front of the back three. Superb once again.
JACK RUDONI: 6.5/7
Worked really hard in a number eight role on the left of the midfield three. Denied by the keeper twice in quick succession as Vigouroux made two big saves/blocks for his team. Had two really good chances denied by the keeper early in the second half when he was unlucky not to extend City’s lead.
JAKE BIDWELL: 6.5
Defended stoutly while getting up and down the left flank against his former club. Faultless performance.
BRANDON THOMAS-ASANTE: 8.5
Put himself about in a lively display and supplied the cross for Simms to put City in front. Scored a sensational Coventry second when he hit the ball from about 40 yards and sent it looping over the back-pedalling keeper who was caught off his line. Set one up and scored one in a terrific shift.
ELLIS SIMMS: 8
Made some decent runs and used his strength and physicality to good effect. Held the ball up nicely and controlled and finished smartly in the six-yard box to give City the 17th minute lead from BTA’s assist. Excellent throughout as his partnership with BTA continues to grow.
