Coventry City had largely themselves to blame as they were dumped out of the fourth round of the FA Cup by Premier League Ipswich Town who punished the Championship side’s mistakes.

It was a frantic start to the cup tie with City conceding a penalty straight from the kick-off when Jamie Allen lost possession in midfield to invite a rapid attack which resulted in Liam Kitching fouling Sam Szmodics in the box and leaving the referee to point straight to the spot with just 30 seconds on the clock. Although Oliver Dovin dived the right way, George Hirst’s hard and low kick was slotted into the bottom corner to give the visitors the second minute lead.

The Sky Blues then got themselves back on level terms six minutes later when Joel Latibeaudiere beat goalkeeper Alex Palmer with a flicked near-post header from a Jack Rudoni corner.

However, Jack Clarke was allowed to cut in from the left and pick his spot with a precise curling finish just before the half hour mark to restore Town’s advantage. The former Sunderland wide man then extended the lead to 3-1 with 37 minutes gone when Luis Binks gave away possession in the box and the ball was played to the right before being sent back in for the forward to touch past the keeper.

Despite an attempted second half fight-back when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto was denied by the keeper who dived low to turn his shot round the post, Town were happy to sit back, soak up the pressure and hit City on the counter attack. And they extended their lead further with a fourth goal just past the hour when a poor Latibueadiere pass was intercepted, resulting in a three man move and Jayden Philogene blasting into the roof of the net at the far post.

OLIVER DOVIN: 4.5/5

Guessed the right way and dived full stretch but unable to keep out Hirst’s hard and low spot-kick to the bottom corner. Well beaten for the second which Clark curled into the bottom corner and exposed for the third. Denied Philogene just after the half hour with a decent save but unable to stop the forward blasting home at the far post after City had given up possession cheaply again.

BOBBY THOMAS: 4.5

A difficult afternoon for the defenders but he read the game reasonably well with some decent interceptions and challenges and went on a brilliant run to get City on the attack in a much improved second half.

LUIS BINKS: 4.5

Caught in possession for the third goal and Ipswich promptly punished City with Jack Clarke bagging his second before the break. Recovered his composure well and showed quality in the second half when he dispossessed Hirst in the box and drove upfield to spark an attack.

LIAM KITCHING: 4.5

Fouled Sam Szmodics with 30 seconds on the clock to concede the early penalty and goal. Otherwise aggressive and alert to danger, getting in decent blocks and tackles on a day when Ipswich’s class showed.

JOEL LATIBEAUDIERE: 4.5/5

Scored with a lovely flicked header at the near post from a corner to get City back on level terms in the eighth minute but it was his poor pass that led to Ipswich breaking on City for the fourth goal.

JOSH ECCLES: 4.5

Battled away in midfield on his return to the side but unable to really stamp his mark or affect the game.

JAMIE ALLEN: 4.5/5

Gave away possession just after kick-off which resulted in Ipswich breaking on City and winning the early penalty. Worked hard as usual but Town’s superior quality showed on the day.

JACK RUDONI: 5.5/6

Sent in a lovely delivery from an eighth minute corner for Latibeaudiere to equalise and was lively going forward where he turned well to get City on the attack. One of City's brighter performers on the day.

JAY DASILVA: 4.5

In for Jake Bidwell at left wing-back. Put a couple of crosses in as City looked OK going forward on a difficult afternoon at the CBS Arena.

TATSUHIRO SAKAMOTO: 5.5

Slotted in on the right of a midfield four out of possession and as part of two advance midfielders with Rudoni when on the attack. Lively going forward. Denied a goal by a really good save by the keeper who pushed his effort round the post as City attempted a second half fight-back. Worked really hard throughout.

BRANDON THOMAS-ASANTE: 4.5

Made a really lively start with some excellent running in behind, albeit his timing ever so slightly off. Ran his socks off but unable to make the desired impact.
