Norman Bassette slotted home the all important deciding penalty as Coventry City beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-3 in a dramatic shootout to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Frank Lampard's men squandered a first half lead from Liam Kitching when they conceded deep in stoppage time to send the third round tie into extra-time, which ended all square at 1-1 and resulted in the game being decided from the spot.

The Sky Blues had weathered a couple of early scares when Wednesday got in behind, albeit off-side, before taking the lead from a 26th minute corner at the CBS Arena. Jack Rudoni floated in the flag kick and the fell to Liam Kitching who turned and smashed home through a group of players.

Ellis Simms had a terrific chance to extend City’s lead early in the second half, only to hit his effort too close to the keeper before Victor Torp hit a shot from the rebound that was blocked when he looked favourite to score.

Wednesday made five substitutions in the second half which helped get them back in the game and become more of a threat as City were forced to defend their slender lead, calling on Oliver Dovin to tip over his bar to deny Barry Bannan a late equaliser. That came, however, in the 93rd minute when City failed to deal with a stoppage time corner, resulting in Anthony Musaba blasting home in the box to send the tie into 30 minutes of extra-time.

Neither side managed to score in extra-time, resulting in the tie going to a penalty shootout, with Torp, Eccles, Rudoni and Bassette scoring, and Bidwell having saved. Wednesday, meanwhile, scored three but Lowe fired over the bar before Kobacki had his saved low by Dovin to leave Bassette to win it with City's fifth and final spot-kick.

STARTING FORMATION: 3-4-1-2

OLIVER DOVIN: 7.5

Got down low to smother an early angled shot from Shea Charles and made a comfortable block to deny Musaba in a positive and confident start by the keeper. Made another save to deny Ignelsson on the half hour. Alert to danger, commanding his area well. Tipped over his bar to deny Bannan a late equaliser. Couldn't really do anything for the late leveller. Made a vital save in the shootout.

BOBBY THOMAS: 7

Won plenty of early headers and tackles while constantly looking to link up with Van Ewijk by sending him free down the right. Kept tabs on Ignelsson and defended really well throughout.

LUIS BINKS: 7

Back in the team and deployed at the heart of the back three where he organised those either side of him and kept things simple and effective. Defended well in the first half and kept it going after the break. Helped play an effective off-side trap. Made a really good block to deny Lowe an equaliser.

LIAM KITCHING: 7

Followed up last week’s impressive first start under Lampard with another solid defensive performance and gave City the first half lead when he turned smartly in the box from a corner and thumped the ball home.

MILAN VAN EWIJK: 6

Got forward down the right where he was a bit hot and cold in the opening half, exciting one minute and frustrating the next. Much better after the break when he sent in a lovely cross for a headed effort from BTA.

JAMIE ALLEN: 7

Took the captain’s armband in Sheaf’s absence and led by example with hard work, while being neat and tidy on the ball. Read the game really well, intercepting passes and making smart lay-offs. A really efficient display from the midfielder.

JACK RUDONI: 6

Picked up an early yellow card in a game in which he was in the thick of the action, nipping in to win second balls and laying passes off to the flanks. Worked really hard throughout. Too slow to react for the equaliser as the closest man to Musaba.

VICTOR TORP: 6.5

Busy and hard working and slipped Simms into the box for a decent early chance. Tried his luck from distance in the first half but sent it high over the bar. Almost doubled City’s lead after the break when he had a powerful shot blocked when he looked favourite to score. Decent shift overall.

JAY DASILVA: 5.5

Got forward well, offering a decent outlet on the left but his final ball let him down on occasions. Looked more confident and threatening in the second half as City went in search of a second goal.

BRANDON THOMAS-ASANTE: 5.5/6

Worked really hard, chasing and closing down from the front as he attempted to strike up a decent understanding with strike partner Simms. Frustrated at times with his decision making, not least when he checked back on himself as City launched a brilliant counter attack in first half stoppage time, only to allow the opposition to get bodies back to defend.

ELLIS SIMMS: 6.5/7

Started really well, looking strong and determined on the ball and forced the keeper to save from a decent angled shot. Had a swagger about him in a really strong first half when he was a real handful. Had a great chance to extend the lead early in the second half when he hit a shot straight at the keeper. Much better from the big lad.

SUBSTITUTES:

JAKE BIDWELL (79 mins, for Dasilva): 5.5/6

Provided fresh legs in an attempt to see out the final ten minutes when Wednesday pushed for an equaliser. Defended pretty well for the time he was involved.

NORMAN BASSETTE (88 mins, for Simms): 6

Ran about a lot and worked hard but nothing really came off for him. Kept a cool head to score City's winning pen in the shootout.

JOSH ECCLES (95 mins, for Thomas-Asante): 5.5

Got straight into the game and up for the physical battle.

TATSUHIRO SAKAMOTO (95 mins, for Binks): 5.5

Added a fresh attacking threat as City switched to four at the back and went with wingers. Linked up nicely with Milan.

RAPHAEL (105 mins, for Allen): 5

Made his CBS Arena debut and showed some nice touches and go his foot in to help win back possession.
