Coventry City predicted XI as stick or tweak decision to be made against Blackburn Rovers
Frank Lampard has to decide whether to stick with a winning team or tweak his Coventry City side for Tuesday night’s trip to face Blackburn Rovers.
The Sky Blues boss will be conscious of the fact that his side are playing the second of three games in a busy week, and may feel the need to manage his squad by adding fresh legs here and there to aid their task in hand at Ewood Park.
The one position that we can say with pretty much certainty that won’t change is in goal where the impressive Oliver Dovin has hit form since his return to the starting line-up, keeping three clean sheets and only conceding fourth goals in his six games since coming back into the side to replace Brad Collins on Boxing Day.

Lampard has switched from a back four to a three with wing-backs in the last three matches which has worked to good effect to help tighten things up in defence, and there’s nothing to suggest that’s likely to change tonight. Whether he restores Bobby Thomas to the trio remains to be seen, with the centre-back dropping out and replaced by Joel Latibeaudiere for the 1-0 home win over Bristol City.
Luis Binks and Liam Kitching completed the back three, with Milan van Ewijk – City’s only senior recognised right-back/wing-back – and Jay Dasilva getting the nod ahead of Jake Bidwell on the left. Dasilva had a decent enough game against his former club, the Robins, and Lampard has to decide whether to stick with him or freshen things up.
The same could be said in midfield where Jamie Allen and Victor Torp operated impressively while Josh Eccles then entered the field in the second half, on this occasion to give Jack Rudoni a rest for the remaining 18 minutes of the game. Allen, however, has earned glowing reviews from his manager and the fans alike for his recent performances when he has taken the armband in the injured Ben Sheaf’s absence and led by example on the pitch.
Given that Rudoni is one of City’s more creative attacking players it’s unlikely that he would be rested to face Rovers, so Torp might be the one to make way for Eccles if Lampard is minded to tweak his pack.
As for his striking options, Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante seem to be benefiting from a run of games together, having shown signs of developing a nice understanding as a front two, and the head coach will be keen for both to continue to grow in confidence in the on-going absence of leading scorer Haji Wright. Certainly, Thomas-Asante’s first goal in three and a half months, since October 1 when, coincidentally, he found the net against Blackburn in the corresponding fixture at the CBS Arena, will have done the former West Brom front man the world of good, while Simms is starting to look like a real handful and proper number nine.
Norman Bassette will be favourite to come in if Lampard feels the need to rest one of the above, while Fabio Tavares appears to be making up the numbers on the bench this season, having been limited to a couple of minutes at Millwall in December – his only Championship appearance this season.
Predicted City team: Oliver Dovin; Joel Latibeaudiere, Luis Binks, Liam Kitching; Milan van Ewijk, Jamie Allen, Victor Torp, Jake Bidwell; Jack Rudoni; Ellis Simms, Brandon Thomas-Asante.
