Coventry City and their Championship rivals have just a few hours left to complete their January business before tonight’s 11pm deadline, but will Frank Lampard add to his squad, or, indeed, let anyone go?

The Sky Blues boss has made a one big statement signing with the arrival of Matt Grimes – a ready-made, top quality midfielder who can hit the ground running – for a significant fee, understood to be between £3.5m-£4m. The 29-year-old Swansea skipper arguably fills a void the club have been unable to address since Gus Hamer left the summer before last, and it shouldn’t be underestimated how good and dynamic a player he is, able to sit and control or operate in a more advanced role.

City have been linked with a host of different players over the last six to eight weeks in a variety of positions, but the team’s form may well have changed the club’s thinking. An experienced centre-half seemed to be on the agenda before Christmas but a change of system and tightening up at the back has eased concerns about leaking goals.

Lampard admitted earlier in the window that his side could do with some "help" on the wings but, again, he’s found a way to get results and spark a bit of form by playing with wing-backs, two eights and a strike partnership up top while he waits for Haji Wright and Ephron Mason-Clark to return to fitness following their injuries.

Meanwhile, there’s also the very real prospect of signing Jamie Paterson on a free transfer after the 33-year-old Coventry-born player has been training with his home town club for the last three or four weeks. Paterson’s versatility and experience makes him a no-brainer for a short-term deal until the end of the season, and the beauty with him is the fact that the deal doesn’t have to be done today. Because he’s unattached, having left MLS side Charlotte FC in North Carolina, he can sign outside the mid-term window.

The only possible fly in the ointment could be if he’s offered a longer, more lucrative deal elsewhere. But, assuming he’s offered a six month contract at the CBS Arena and that the player is keen, he could be he icing on the cake of this current transfer window in terms of his attacking ability and versatility in being able to play wide on the left, right, as an attacking midfielder or second striker.

Lampard has been linked with interest in a number of rising young prospects from his former club, Chelsea, but CoventryLive understands that any late loan deal is now unlikely.

In terms of outgoings, despite rumours to the contrary, it’s highly unlikely that the City boss will let any established or senior first teamers go today. He has been pretty consistent over the last few weeks in insisting he wants to keep his squad together, a point he was keen to make when first Liam Kitching and then Brandon Thomas-Asante were reported to be wanted by Blackburn Rovers.

Josh Eccles is the latest one doing the rounds on social media, but why would Lampard weaken his hand just as the team are building momentum and edging closer to the top six? The arrival of Grimes, presumably, has prompted the talk and suggestions that he’ll struggle to get game time. But City have a lot of games coming up and the home grown talent, who only signed a new long term contract recently, is a versatile player who can also offer cover at right wing-back if required.

In terms of any other outgoings, Lampard revealed at the weekend that ‘no decision’ had been made on recalled duo Ryan Howley and Jack Burroughs and that the club is remaining open minded on them being redirected elsewhere, saying that if they “get good opportunities then maybe they can go and play games.”

So, all in all, it’s shaping up to be a fairly quiet day for the Sky Blues.
