Frank Lampard and his Coventry City players are determined to right the wrongs of Saturday’s dreadful display at Portsmouth when they get back to action against bottom club Plymouth Argyle on Boxing Day.

The Sky Blues boss admits he’s “pondering” making changes for the CBS Arena clash against his old England teammate Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims who travel to the West Midlands with a woeful record on the road – having failed to win a single Championship match away from Home Park.

Argyle, who have somewhat of a striker crisis after two more front men suffered injuries at the weekend, have scored just three away goals so far this term and shipped a whopping 29 on their travels.

The big question is, however, how Lampard will react to his own team’s deficiencies in terms of his team selection? The most vulnerable position in the team right now would appear to be in goal, where Brad Collins' eight game run in the side may well be coming to an end after conceding 15 goals in eight games.

Oliver Dovin will be on standby to return while Ben Wilson will be desperately hoping to be in the reckoning if he can get through training after his extended time out with a knee ligament strain. The 32-year-old, who is City’s most vocal and experienced keeper, was in full training last week and could come back into contention.

There are also question marks at the back after none of the starting four at Fratton Park covered themselves in glory in the 4-1 defeat. Certainly the fact that Joel Latibeaudiere went on for Bobby Thomas might suggest that Lampard may well favour the Jamaican this time around, albeit the defender has suffered fluctuating form himself, having been outstanding at Millwall but then culpable for one of West Brom’s goals in the following match.

Luis Binks was static for Pompey’s fourth last time out and one wonders whether Lampard will use Boxing Day to take a look at Liam Kitching, who is yet to feature under the new boss. Elsewhere, Jake Bidwell is an obvious replacement for Jay Dasilva who, like Collins, had a stinker at the weekend, although some have wondered whether Binks should be shuffled across to left-back. With no direct competition, Milan van Ewijk looks safe at right-back, unless Latibeaudiere is deployed there.

Turning to the midfield, it’s difficult to see skipper Ben Sheaf being dropped, which means it’s a toss up between Josh Eccles, Victor Torp and Jamie Allen to partner him – although the latter has a case for a first start under Lampard to show the new gaffer what he can do.

Ephron Mason-Clark and Norman Bassette were two players to come out with some credit against Portsmouth, while Tatsuhiro Sakamoto is arguably City’s best option on the right in the absence of any direct competition. Brandon Thomas-Asante is an option but has been disappointing by his standards of late, while Ellis Simms is still to get going this season as City continue to be without the injured Haji Wright.

One man who might benefit from last weekend, meanwhile, could be Fabio Tavares, who is yet to get his chance in front of Lampard.

Predicted City team v Plymouth: Ben Wilson; Milan van Ewijk, Joel Latibeaudiere, Liam Kitching, Jake Bidwell; Ben Sheaf, Victor Torp; Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark; Norman Bassette.
