CROSFIELDS snatched victory from Woolston Rovers with the last play of the game in a very entertaining Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington Cup Final at Victoria Park Stadium on Saturday.

Rovers looked set to claim the trophy when they led 22-4 after half an hour but a strong fightback from Soap saw them hit back late in both halves to break the Green and Gold hearts, with the match-clinching try coming almost 10 minutes into added time at the end of the second half.

Crosfields finally ran out 30-28 victors.

Rovers opened the scoring after three minutes, hooker Sean Boyle twisting over from dummy half after prop forward Matt Taylor was held just short. Second row Craig Lawton converted.

Seven minutes later a short ball from stand-off Ryan Brown found full-back James Tarpey who stretched over from close range, with Lawton again converting.

Crosfields responded shortly afterwards when quick hands led to full-back Jamie Abram finding centre Joe Kohe-Love and he put winger Dylon Braddish over wide out.

Rovers pulled clear again on 26 minutes when Brown jinked past three defenders on the last tackle to score at the side of the posts. Lawton converted and then just after the half-hour mark a short ball from the impressive Brown found Lawton who crashed over on the left.

Five minutes before the break Crosfields scrum-half Brad Stanway put second-row Nathan Lyon through a gap and he returned the ball to Stanway to finish off as well as convert.

As half-time approached Crosfields had a scrum 20 metres out and from that centre Luke Walker put substitute Aaron Holliday over in the left corner to make the half-time score 22-14 in Rovers’ favour.

Eight minutes into the second half a cross-field kick on the last tackle from Stanway was fumbled on their own line by Rovers and Holliday reacted quickest to pick up the loose ball and score on the left. Stanway converted.

Four minutes later Rovers scored their fifth try when Brown found Lawton and he gave a lovely ball back inside for prop forward Jake Proudlove to cross. Lawton added the conversion.

As the game entered the final three minutes Crosfields gave themselves a lifeline when quick hands down the right saw the ball reach man-of-the-match second-row Elliot Liku who used his size to score wide out. Stanway converted to bring his side back to within two points once again.

And then deep into time added on Rovers attempted to put the ball out of play but Walker managed to collect the ball and he broke through the line and raced 70 metres to score on the left and give Soap a narrow win.

Straight from the restart Bridge went over once again when Blackburn-Woods scored a try and also converted but then Bulls second-row Joe Battensby responded with a try. Stand off Jay-Jay Catterall added the conversion to make the half-time score 12-10 in Burtonwood’s favour.

Five minutes into the second half Bulls went back in front when Catterall scored a try and tagged on the extras and then five minutes later they moved further clear when substitute Ben Barnes crossed. Catterall added the conversion.

Burtonwood threatened a comeback when centre Jacob Almond scored and then from the restart they went over again through centre Dan Smith set up a grandstand last 10 minutes but Bulls managed to hold on.
