Crosfields get a moment to savour despite Challenge Cup exit
WHILE the gulf in class ultimately proved too much for Crosfields against Championship opposition, they still had a moment to savour in their Challenge Cup second-round tie.
The Warrington-based amateur side were reaping the rewards of beating Maryport in the first round as they earned a trip to second-tier outfit Barrow Raiders on Saturday.
As expected, the match went to form as Barrow were too strong, running in 16 tries to wrap up an 86-6 victory and a third-round tie against fellow Championship side Oldham.
However, Crosfields ensured they would not be kept off the scoresheet and when Tom Brown crashed over the whitewash in the second half, it gave their travelling supporters a moment to enjoy.
That try took the score to 44-6 in Barrow’s favour after the Raiders had gone into half-time 38-0 in front, but Paul Crarey’s side then ran in 42 unanswered points inside the final 25 minutes as Soap tired.
Curtis Teare and Shane Toal both scored hat-tricks, with former Warrington Wolves forward Ellis Robson and Andrew Bulman both touching down twice.
Brad Walker scored 26 points on his own courtesy of a try and 11 goals, with Barrow’s other tries coming from Ryan King, Razor Silva, Tom Wilkinson, Ryan Johnston and Josh Wood.
Crosfields now move onto the Warrington Cup Final against neighbours Woolston Rovers, a date for which is still to be confirmed, before their National Conference League Division One campaign starts at home to Ince Rose Bridge on March 15.
