Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner: "VAR was right to award Bryan Mbeumo's retake"
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner had no complaints with VAR’s decision to award a retake of Bryan Mbeumo’s decisive penalty.
Brentford were awarded a spot kick an hour into their 2-1 victory after Maxence Lacroix clipped Nathan Collins.
Mbeumo stepped up and struck the post before Marc Guehi cleared the ball behind for a corner.
However, Guehi was adjudged to have encroached and the penalty was retaken following four minutes of checks from VAR.
The Bees forward made no mistake with his second chance, firing the West London club ahead.
Speaking after Palace’s first defeat in seven, Glasner believes it was the right decision to award a retake.
“It looked like a game where the first mistake would be costly. Unfortunately, before the penalty we made too many mistakes – I think four in a row in our box.
“The VAR was right, Marc was half a yard or a yard inside the area, that is not allowed. What makes it really tough is that Mbeumo hit the post and the ball fell to him, so if he touched the ball then it would have been a free kick for us.
“If anything, Marc was a little too early which let him get to the ball before Mbeumo, just by a few inches.
“Mbeumo got a second chance. In this situation, the VAR was right, but the penalty should not have happened [in the first place].
“We had three or four chances to clear and we were not able to do it. It is frustrating.”
