Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is content with his side's winter transfer window after successfully securing the signings of Ben Chilwell and Romain Esse.

Chilwell, 27, joined the Eagles from Chelsea on a half-season loan on deadline day while Esse arrived for £14.5m in mid-January from Millwall.

Heading into the window, Glasner revealed that he wanted two early signings to bolster his squad for the remainder of the season.

Despite the delay in getting Chilwell and Esse over the line, the Europa League winning coach insists that Palace had a productive window.

“I think it was a very positive transfer window for us because we defined targets, positions and the profiles very early, far before the transfer window,” Glasner divulged.

“We started working on it, like always. Of course, if I had two wishes free, then we would have signed them on the 1st January, and they would have started training with us on the 2nd. But I’m really convinced that we found the right players for us.

“With Romain, [he is] a young, talented player and with Ben, a much more experienced player, knowing the Premier League.

“We always want to have a good combination in our group. We loaned Jeffrey Schlupp to Celtic, so we lost a very Premier League experienced player and a very important player in the dressing room.

“Schlupp is highly respected by everyone in the dressing room and the club because of his career and personality. That’s always what we have to consider. I think we did a good job.”

Wharton and Chilwell unexpected to start concurrently

Oliver Glasner is unlikely to start Adam Wharton and Ben Chiwell alongside each other in Monday's FA Cup fourth round clash against Doncaster.

Last weekend, Wharton made his first appearance since October following groin surgery in early November.

Equally, Chilwell has been limited to 45 minutes of football this season after being axed from Enzo Maresca's Chelsea squad, with the former England international forced to train alone at Cobham.

Although both Wharton and Chilwell are fit, Glasner is hesitant to start the duo together in case he is forced into early substitutions against Doncaster.

"Both are ready to start," Glasner said, "but I don’t want to plan that both have to be subbed off at half time.

"For example, if we have to plan two subs at half time, that leaves us with just three opportunities, and we never know what happens in a game.

"I have to think more in detail about it, but when you ask me now, my feeling tells me that it is not a good idea to start both at the same time when both are not available for 90 minutes. Maybe on Sunday I will have a different opinion.”

Esse's chance to shine?

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is pondering a first start for £14.5 million winter signing Romain Esse at Keepmoat on Monday.

The 19-year-old joined the Eagles from South London rivals Millwall during the winter window and has been named in both matchday squads since his switch to SE25.

Glasner handed Esse his debut from the bench in January's 2-1 defeat to Brentford, with the teenager earning Palace a lifeline, scoring just 30 seconds after being subbed on.

He was an unused substitute in last week's 2-0 victory away to Manchester United.

With the absence of Eberechi Eze ahead of Monday's fourth round FA Cup tie away to Doncaster, Glasner is open to handing Esse his first start in red and blue.

“It’s possible, yes," noted Glasner. "But there are many things to consider. It’s different during a [busy] week, maybe then you have to manage the minutes.

(Image: PA) “Whereas, now we have three games in two weeks – a normal week – you also have to consider keeping the players in the rhythm and giving players minutes.

“It’s the same, we can’t expect Ben Chilwell and Adam Wharton playing 90 minutes. So, many things we are thinking about and then we will decide at the latest Monday noon if we take the other players.

"He’s doing well in training and all the others as well."

Glasner’s food for thought

Oliver Glasner is cautious when managing the minutes of Crystal Palace academy product Caleb Kporha.

The 18-year-old has been named in the first-team squad 21 times this season but restricted to three appearances.

He made his senior debut in November’s 2-0 defeat to Fulham before being awarded his first start in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

While Glasner is keen to give Kporha game time - and is in his thoughts ahead of the trip to Doncaster - the Palace boss wants to wait for the right opportunities.

“Yes, there is [a chance he could play against Doncaster], Glasner shared. "Like every single player, I would really like to [give him minutes]. When we give young players their first minutes, I’m always considering if it is the best moment for them?

“At Manchester United, at the end, we struggled and at 1-0 up, if we brought on a young player - everyone can make a mistake.

“We have Nathaniel Clyne, an experienced player. He can make a mistake as well, and they get the equaliser.

“Clyne, with all his experience, will find it is easier to deal with the situation than Caleb, because then you have all the media and all the fans.

“We want to find the right moment for him to show his strengths. We have a lot of trust in him, that’s why he trains every day with us.

“We manage the minutes with the under-21s, so he gets some minutes, but he is doing well. He is improving and improving. If we feel it is the right moment, he will get minutes.”
