Crystal Palace set to complete £14.5m Romain Esse signing from Millwall as medical booked
Crystal Palace are set to sign Romain Esse after his medical on Friday.
The 19-year-old winger from Millwall will join the Eagles for a fee of £12m, rising to £14.5m, if he passes all medical tests.
Palace insisted on Esse joining the club in January, rather than being loaned back to Millwall for the rest of the season, but Saturday’s clash against West Ham will come too early for him to be involved.
Standard Sport revealed back in December that they had held discussions over a move for the versatile attacker internally.
Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has watched the England-U20 international in action for Millwall from the stands numerous times this season.
While other Premier League clubs also held an interest in signing Esse, the Eagles stepped up their interest earlier this month when they made an official bid to sign him.
Esse was left out of the squad for Millwall’s 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup third round on Monday, with manager Alex Neil saying: “Crystal Palace have shown a lot of interest in Romain.
“I didn't make him available for the game and I think the situation is progressing and what I wouldn't do is put that at risk at this stage. If that changes then Romain will be back in the squad.
”But Esse is now set to join Palace as their first signing of the January transfer window.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner has said that the Eagles are “committed” to signing two players this month.
It is understood that they are also in the market for a left wing-back, where a bid for El Hadji Malick Diouf worth £12.5m was rejected by Slavia Prague right at the beginning of the window.
Standard Sport has since revealed that the Czech club believe Palace will not bid again.
