Crystal Palace vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Diogo Jota secures testing win
Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points with a controlled victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The hosts kicked off the match is furious fashion and found the back of the net in just 22 seconds after Ismaila Sarr slotted in Eddie Nketiah only for the striker to be caught offside.
In response, Liverpool netted the opener through a fine pass from Kostas Tsimikas who released Cody Gakpo down the left. He carried the ball to the box then picked out Diogo Jota for a simple side footed finish.
Liverpool could not convert their first half dominance into a second goal, thanks in part to some good saves from Dean Henderson, which left them vulnerable in the second 45 minutes.
Oliver Glasner made a couple of changes and introduced Jean-Philippe Mateta and Will Hughes who swung the momentum but Palace couldn’t find an equaliser and Liverpool clung on for the win.

Alisson underlines true origin of Liverpool’s title challenge - and their decision for the future
15:06 , Mike Jones
Alisson Becker remains the king of Selhurst Park, but if he and Virgil van Dijk showed what Liverpool’s title bid will be built on this season, a win at Crystal Palace was perhaps also another indication of why the Reds spent part of this summer looking at the future.
The last time the Eagles won at home against Liverpool was November 2014, long before the Brazilian arrived; on that occasion Mile Jedinak wrapped up the points with a free-kick sent past Simon Mignolet. In the decade since, the Merseyside club’s defence as a whole has gotten considerably better, as has the holder of the No.1 position.

Slot on Vitezslav Jaros’ debut:
15:00 , Mike Jones
“Really good. He had a good season and he won the league and cup with the team [Sturm Graz] in Austria [last season].
“He wanted to go [back this season] and have playing time. We said at a club like this we need a good third goalkeeper as well.
“It was a nice moment for him to make his debut for Liverpool.”
Liverpool top the table going into the international break
14:57 , Mike Jones
Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: “Mostly for me it’s special.
“Players go to their national team and they think of the national team, but for me if I lose it is three to four days of being unhappy. I think my wife will be happy as she will have someone home who is happy.
“Really satisfied with how we started the season. It is a good start not only the results, but I liked our performance today.
“There was a period of the game we conceded free-kicks and that was a difficult period. For the last 10 minutes we kept the ball very well.”
Arne Slot issues update on Alisson hamstring injury
14:56 , Mike Jones
Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace in a testing encounter at Selhurst Park but suffered a big injury to their number one goalkeeper Alisson who limped off the pitch in the second half of their 1-0 win.
The Reds dominated the first 45 minutes with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota impressing as the visitors controlled the tempo of the game before opening the scoring in the ninth minute through Jota’s side-footed finish.
Alisson was brought into the game after the break and denied Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah with some sharp reactionary saves before pulling up in pain having innocuously cleared a loose ball.

“I think there is always expectations towards different teams - whatever the outside world thinks of us we don’t really care.
“We want to try challenge, compete, win and be successful.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports:
14:38 , Mike Jones
“It is hard to come here. The results over the years are tight and close.
“I think obviously we scored a fantastic goal. We could have done better in the second half, but we knew they’d come out with a bit of pressure on the ball.
“It ends our run on a high before the internationals.”
A great start for Slot
14:35 , Mike Jones
Liverpool have won 9 of their 10 games across all competitions under Arne Slot. That’s a record for a new Liverpool manager.
If you’re being critical as well, Liverpool don’t seem to have fully clicked under Slot. They just seem to know how to win.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool win again but they were made to work for it in the second half by the hosts. Alisson’s injury could be a defining moment of the season but the result is the one the Reds wanted.
Crystal Palace will be pleased with their performance but it’s another defeat and their struggles continue.

‘Jaros makes Liverpool debut'
14:08 , Karl Matchett at Selhurst Park
“It’s going to be a senior and Premier League debut for Vitezslav Jaros, Liverpool’s sub keeper, with Alisson Becker going down holding his hamstring.
“The away side have let this game drift and Palace have very much come back into it over the last 20 minutes, putting Liverpool under pressure - which means a pretty intimidating quarter of an hour or so for the young stopper as he makes his way onto the pitch.”
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
14:07 , Mike Jones
79 mins: Yeah, Alisson isn’t in a good way and hobbles off the pitch with this match on the line. Liverpool’s second choice goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher isn’t at Selhurst Park so Vitezslav Jaros replaces him.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
14:06 , Mike Jones
76 mins: Crystal Palace have ramped up the intensity and desire. Mateta and Hughes have been exciting additions for the hosts who look more dangerous.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
14:02 , Mike Jones
73 mins: Marc Guehi is brought down inside the box after Virgil van Dijk holds him back from reaching an aerial ball. VAR looks at the incident but doesn’t rule things Palace’s way.
Guehi is visibly frustrated by that.

70 mins: Save!
That’s Palace’s best chance. Mateta holds the ball up and lays it off under pressure from the Liverpool defence. The ball comes across to Eberechi Eze who fires a left-footed effort at goal only for Alisson to turn it wide of the far post!

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

66 mins: Alisson is forced into another save as Eddie Nketiah finds the target with a pacey effort. Palace have popped up occasionally with a decent chance but the Liverpool goalkeeper has been up to the task.

Big moment for the hosts.

54 mins: The tempo of the game has slackened with Liverpool attempting to assert full control on the game. With only a one-goal lead they are at risk of a potential upset.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
13:38 , Mike Jones
48 mins: It’s been a difficult start to the season for Crystal Palace, especially with how well they ended last season. They’ve seemingly strengthened the squad too - minus Michael Olise’s departure - but things just haven’t bee firing.
Why this is happening is a curious question Oliver Glasner needs to find an answer for.
‘Liverpool should have had a second'
13:36 , Karl Matchett at Selhurst Park
“A brief flurry at the end of the first half from the home side will remind Liverpool they haven’t done anywhere near enough yet to get this game won.
“They really ought to have found a second goal; several players could have scored, Diogo Jota should have.
“Doesn’t look like Arne Slot wants to take any chances, with Dominik Szoboszlai coming on by the looks of things.”
Second half! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
13:35 , Mike Jones
Arne Slot has made a change at the break with Dominik Szoboszlai replacing Alexis Mac Allister. The visitors get the ball rolling once again.
HT Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
13:26 , Mike Jones
Here’s a little insight into Liverpool’s control.
They’ve had 73% possession and have created eight attempts at goal. In comparison, Palace have had one shot though it was on target.
That came in added time through Ismaila Sarr.
Liverpool can improve in the final third, only two of their eight chances were on target and if that improves then things could get messy for Palace.

A solid half from Liverpool with Diogo Jota sending the visitors ahead. Can they see out this game in the second half?
Half-time! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

45+2 mins: A lovely first half for Liverpool despite conceding a goal that eventually got chalked off. Palace had a chance to equalise right at the end of the half as Ismaila Sarr drew a stop out of Alisson.
Diogo Jota’s goal is the only difference as it stands with Liverpool dominating most of the proceedings.

A quick transition from Liverpool sees them pick out Mo Salah on the right side of the pitch. He carries the ball up to the penalty area and combines with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The right-back takes the ball into the box and passes to Diogo Jota who attempts a simple side footed effort but gets it all wrong and turns the ball well wide of the target.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
13:01 , Mike Jones
30 mins: Half an hour played at Selhurst Park and Liverpool have already had five corners with the most recent being easily dealt with once more.
There’s a dynamic and intense feel to Liverpool’s play, it’s almost as though they want to smother Palace and give them no time to think or operate.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
12:59 , Mike Jones
27 mins: Joe Cole on TNT Sports punditry says that Crystal Palace need to do something different or else the game will run away from them.
He’s right, Liverpool are dominating possession and Palace can barely hold onto the ball for more than a minute or two. Trent Alexander-Arnold shoots and draws a low save out of Dean Henderson.
‘Loss of Munoz a blow'
12:56 , Karl Matchett at Selhurst Park
“After Palace’s false start, they simply haven’t been able to string a few passes together and the crowd are starting to get a little irate at the lack of ability to move the ball forward through midfield.
“The loss of Munoz to injury is another blow, given how well he fits the role of being an outlet down the flank - and being quicker than Clyne too, for keeping up with Gakpo’s runs out wide.
“Liverpool are finding it too easy to get the ball into Salah’s feet so far and both Mac Allister and Jones are getting into the box with regularity. A second doesn’t feel all that far away.”
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
12:55 , Mike Jones
24 mins: Mo Salah dances into the box and lets fly but his effort is blocked and deflected out for a corner. Kostas Tsimikas whips in the set piece which gets headed over the cross by Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
12:47 , Mike Jones
18 mins: Munoz seems to have an issue for Crystal Palace which will be a big blow. He’s trotted off the pitch for a bit of treatment meaning the hosts are playing with 10-men for the time being.
Nathaniel Clyne eventually replaces him and restores the hosts to parity.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool

15 mins: Save!
Alexander-Arnold slips a pass into the right side of the box for Mo Salah who collects it with eagerness. He squares a pass into the six-yard area where Alexis Mac Allister leaps over the ball thinking a teammate is behind him.
There isn’t one but the ball is heading for goal until Dean Henderson sticks out a leg and diverts its path with a sharp, late save.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
12:43 , Mike Jones
12 mins: Liverpool look in control now. The goal has settled them down and deflated the early momentum of Crystal Palace. Trent Alexander-Arnold is lacing passes all over the pitch but is happy to remain out wide on the right to deliver crosses into the box.
A corner for the visitors is met in the air by Jefferson Lerma who nods is clear with gusto.
GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool - (Diogo Jota, 9 minutes)
12:40 , Mike Jones
Liverpool strike first!
Just as Crystal Palace look to be settling into the game Liverpool break through the lines after a fine pass from Kostas Tsimikas. The pace of the attack quickens up as Cody Gakpo flies down the left and slides a ball into the middle of the box.
Diogo Jota bursts through the cluster of defenders, gets to the ball first and guides it home!

3 mins: Liverpool were almost rocked in just 22 seconds as Crystal Palace sought to emulate Brentford’s early goals. Eddie Nketiah just drifted too far forward and the visitors have a reprieve.
Since then, the Reds have got themselves on the ball and are forcing Palace to defend inside their own half.
Kick off! Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool
12:32 , Mike Jones
Palace get the ball rolling and boot it long over to the right side of the pitch. Liverpool look to break through the middle but Jefferson Lerma lunges in and nicks possession.
He gives it to Adam Wharton who slides a fine pass out to Ismaila Sarr.
Sarr squares a pass into the box where Eddie Nketiah scores! What a start... oh no.
The offside flag goes up and the goal is chalked off.
‘Big atmosphere at Selhurst'
12:30 , Karl Matchett at Selhurst Park
“Big atmosphere pre-match at Selhurst as usual - the home fans don’t seem particularly downbeat despite being winless so far.
“Facing the league leaders isn’t really what you want in that kind of situation but Liverpool have already shown they are not fallible - and Arne Slot has made a few changes today too.
“This is usually a good fixture in terms of action and talking points, but until the end-of-season win for Palace last term, it’s also a fixture the Reds have been heavily dominant in for a few years.”

Here come the players.
The teams make their way out onto the pitch at Selhurst Park. Palace will be hoping for a strong start, Liverpool want to keep their winning run going.
Let’s see how it all plays out. Kick off is up next...
Pre-match thoughts from Cody Gakpo
12:26 , Mike Jones
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo spoke to TNT Sports ahead of kick off saying: “We are busy building a great squad with a new manager and new ideas.
“We are a big club and we want to win every game and trophies. At the moment we are focused on winning each game.”
Glasner on Sarr starting the game against Liverpool:
12:23 , Mike Jones
“Ismaila [Sarr] had very good performances when he came into the game and always had a positive impact.”
“He has a lot of pace and we expect Liverpool to play with dominance and aggression, so there will be space in behind and this is one of the strengths of ismaila Sarr and we hope that he can find and use this space and score goals.”
Salah close to Fowler’s record
12:20 , Mike Jones
Mohamed Salah has scored in all three Premier League away appearances so far this season. Salah needs two goals to equal Robbie Fowler’s Premier League total of 163.
Palace have a decent home record
12:10 , Mike Jones
Crystal Palace have won two of their four home fixtures in all competitions this term, drawing one and losing the other.
Eddie Nketiah on his Crystal Palace bromance, playing No 10 and why he left Arsenal: ‘It was time to go’
12:07 , Mike Jones
Eberechi Eze ambles over to take the free-kick and as he does so, Eddie Nketiah scans his surroundings. It is still early in this Carabao Cup third-round tie and QPR’s defenders are busy getting organised. Eze and Nketiah make the briefest eye contact and the grift is on: Eze quickly slides the ball into a vacant channel down the right side of the box, and before a defender can react, Nketiah peels into space before unleashing a first-time shot through the goalkeeper’s legs.
It is Crystal Palace’s first glimpse of what to expect from their £25m summer signing, the second most expensive transfer in the club’s history. The understanding, the intelligence, the economy of effort: in one run and one touch, Nketiah showed the sharp edge he adds to a team.

Slot’s successful start
12:00 , Mike Jones
Arne Slot is the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his opening nine games in charge. Liverpool have won all four of their away matches this season across all competitions.
Pre-match thoughts from Oliver Glasner:
11:57 , Mike Jones
“We want to play against Liverpool, we want to compete with the best teams and we want to get our first win. Today no one expects us to get three points but we want it and its an opportunity for us to get a win.
“I’m really convinced the team will give everything they have and we will see.”
Crystal Palace make worst start to season
11:55 , Mike Jones
The Eagles have equalled their second-worst start to a campaign over the past 12 seasons. Ian Holloway’s newly-promoted side also earned three points from six matches in 2013-14.
Gravenberch opens up on start to season
11:50 , Mike Jones
Ryan Gravenberch has spoken about Liverpool’s start to the season and how he is fitting into his new midfield role. He said:
“I know Dom [Szoboszlai] and Alexis [Mac Allister] really well. If you play often with them, you know the quality of them and then - I don’t know the word for it - but when Mac Allister goes higher, I have to come on, so we know from each other what the other guys are going to do. We know everything from each other [and] also now we play a lot of games together.
“I think a player always wants to play every game. Obviously the last two seasons at Bayern [Munich] I didn’t play that much [and] last season I played more. This season I get a lot of minutes, so the confidence is really back and I think it shows. I think the games in September went really well and when you’re getting minutes the confidence comes back.
“It came quite naturally. When I first spoke with the coach he said to me, ‘I see you as a No.8 like last season, but I want to try you as a No.6 as well.’ So, I was like, ‘OK, yeah, we can do it!’ I said to him, ‘Of course, we can do it!’ and the rest is history.”
Palace seeking first win of season

Crystal Palace are still seeking their first Premier League victory this season, having drawn three and lost three of their opening six games.
Arne Slot identifies the key to Liverpool’s title bid after struggle under Jurgen Klopp

Arne Slot has targeted transforming Liverpool’s away form as the answer to his “£10m question” after concluding their record on the road last season cost them the title.
Liverpool go to Crystal Palace on Saturday after winning all three away league matches under Slot, beating Ipswich, Manchester United and Wolves, and prevailing in their Champions League opener against AC Milan at the San Siro.
In Jurgen Klopp’s final season, Liverpool had the best home record in the Premier League as they took 48 points, one more than both champions Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal.

Slot on Salah and Gravenberch
11:25 , Mike Jones
Two of Liverpool’s most influential players, Mo Salah and Ryan Gravenberch have been receiving praise from their manager in the build-up to today’s game.
Arne Slot said: “I think why players play well has first of all to do with the quality they have as players. Mo has a lot of quality, Ryan has a lot of quality.
“Actually, every player that plays here has a lot of quality. Now it’s up to us – and I say us because it’s not only me and my staff, it’s also the players – to play in the best possible way as a team and then individuals will do special things. It was an unbelievable finish from Mo [on Wednesday night] but the only reason he got the chance to finish was because Trent Alexander-Arnold made an overlapping run and that’s why it opened up on the inside.
“And if you give that space to Mo, he can score a special goal. That’s about his quality. It’s about Ryan’s quality, but the amount of times Virgil [van Dijk] or Ibou [Konate] play balls through to Ryan where Ryan can turn and play his balls towards all the good attackers we have, that makes it in my opinion a team performance, which is really good.
“Then as a result of that you see individuals playing well also.”
Crystal Palace vs Liverpool team changes
11:24 , Mike Jones
Oliver Glasner makes two changes to the Crystal Palace side that lost to Everton last time out. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada are dropped with Trevoh Chalobah and Ismaila Sarr brought into the line-up.
For Liverpool, Arne Slot makes a bunch of changes to the team that faced Bologna in the week. Andy Robertson is replaced with Kostas Tsimikas while Dominik Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are taken out in favour of Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo.

Arne Slot taking it one match at a time
11:12 , Mike Jones
The Liverpool boss was asked how he feels about upcoming matches against the likes of Arsenal after the international break but reitered his team’s focus about tackling each game as it comes.
Speaking ahead of today’s fixture Slot said: “You always look at the first one and that’s Crystal Palace. I think they already showed how tough of an opponent they are against the big teams, like [Manchester] United and Chelsea.
“In both situations they got a result. That’s the first game and that’s why it’s the most important one, and a difficult one for us: 12.30 kick-off after playing on Wednesday evening late in the Champions League, facing again a team that has a whole week to prepare.
“But that is part of working at a top club, that we face those teams and we have to be ready for those teams. And that’s what we are tomorrow.
“I don’t look at this moment about one point, three points, four points; it’s after the weekend then it’s interesting to look at the league table and not after the game we’ve played.”
Arne Slot highlights Ryan Gravenberch improvement - and how Liverpool must help Darwin Nunez
11:06 , Mike Jones
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised the improvement of Ryan Gravenberch during the current campaign, but highlighted the next challenge for his compatriot: to maintain consistency after his best run of form in several seasons.
The Dutch midfielder only sporadically featured under Jurgen Klopp and before signing for the Reds at Bayern Munich.
But under Slot he is a first-choice pick in the holding midfield spot, where he has flourished this term thanks to improved defensive efforts and some big showings of pace and power.

Crystal Palace are still seeking their first win of the Premier League season as they welcome Liverpool FC to Selhurst Park.
After such a positive end to the last campaign under Oliver Glasner, the south London club have been sluggish out of the blocks with just three draws from their first six games.
By contrast, Liverpool top the table after a flying start under Arne Slot, with a solid Champions League win over Bologna in midweek keeping the momentum rolling.
A short turnaround may pose Slot and his squad problems, though, as they attempt to keep setting the pace.

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of today’s Premier League action.
Things kick off with Liverpool’s trip to Crystal Palace as the Reds look to extend their lead at the top of the table. Arne Slot’s side have only lost once in their first six league games and are in good form following a 2-0 win over Bologna during the week.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, are searching for their first victory of the season and a chance to move out of the relegation places. The Eagles lost to Everton last time out and will have a much tougher time of things this afternoon.
We’ll have all the team news, line-ups and more from Selhurst Park so stick with us as we build up to kick off at 12.30pm.
