Crystal Palace edged bottom-placed Southampton 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday, securing their second home win in the Premier League thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Trevor Chalobah.

The victory lifted Palace one place in the standings to 15th, while Southampton remained winless under new manager Ivan Juric, suffering a second consecutive defeat following their 1-0 Boxing Day loss to West Ham United.

Southampton had the more energetic start and took the lead in the 14th minute after Kyle Walker-Peters skipped past Daniel Munoz and his cross found Adam Armstrong, who set up Tyler Dibling for a simple tap-in.

Palace pressed hard for an equaliser and made it 1-1 in the 31st minute when Trevor Chalobah headed in from a corner before Eze sealed the three points for the home side with a strike from the edge of the box.

17:07

It will be a very happy new year in South London as Crystal Palace win their final game of the calendar year for the fourth year in a row, the first time since 1963. They have Chalobah and Eze to thank as they made sure all three points stayed in the capital on a cold Winter afternoon. The game was largely dominated by Palace, but they went behind in the 14th minute, against the run of play. Dibling smashed home from a couple of yards out to give the away team an advantage, after a flick-on by Armstrong. Their lead didn’t last all that long, however, as Palace hit back in the 31st minute. Hughes’ left-footed corner was nodded in at the near post by Chalobah, and after a brief VAR check for a foul - the scoreline was level again. In the second half, Palace came out with intent to win and they got their second goal in the 52nd minute. There was a mess in and around the Southampton area until the ball fell kindly to a waiting Eze. He had no hesitation as he powerfully slammed the ball past Ramsdale’s right to give Palace the lead. It was a nervy ending to the game for the home team, as Southampton continued to come forward but the pressure didn’t pay off in the end. Palace won the game, and they returned to winning ways before the new year. Palace managed to create 1.82 xG from 19 shots, and Southampton drummed up 1.3 xG from seven shots. FULL-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:54

Yellow Card Edward Keddar Nketiah

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:53

Palace make another sub with a couple of minutes to go. Nketiah comes on and replaces Sarr who has been absolutely brilliant in this game. There is only a minute or so left for Nketiah to make an impact.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:51

CHANCE! Munoz fails to win it in the dying minutes! He was played in on the right brilliantly by Sarr, following a good run from Mateta. The right-back tried a similar finish to his goal recently, but Ramsdale saved with ease. It’s still 2-1!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:49

There will be five added minutes!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:49

Time is running out for Southampton, it’s getting to the ‘now or never’ stages of the game. They have played reasonably well, they just haven’t created enough in attack.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:49

The last change saw Lallana coming on to try and create something late on. He replaced Southampton’s goalscorer, Dibling.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:49

Southampton switch it up in defence with Manning joining the game. He replaced Walker-Peters, who has been bright, in the backline.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:49

Another change in midfield for Palace. Hughes is hooked after being booked earlier, and he is replaced by Doucoure for the closing minutes.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:47

Both sides make two changes. Eze leaves the pitch after a brilliant goal in this game, and he is replaced by Kamada in midfield.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:46

Palace are knocking the ball around nicely, as they try and run down the clock and keep the ball away from the away side.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:44

Into the last 10 minutes we go, and Palace still lead in what could be a big win for their season overall. Can Southampton salvage something for themselves?

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:39

Yellow Card Jan Kacper Bednarek

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:38

Hughes goes into the book for a textbook tactical foul. Fernandes was running at him very quickly as he headed towards the goal, and he put a stop to that with a late challenge which got him booked.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:37

Interestingly, Oliver Glasner hasn’t made a change to his side yet, especially around this busy period of the football calendar. It’s working at the moment, but surely a change is coming for the home side!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:34

Southampton are putting on a lot of pressure as we go into the last 15 minutes. They can smell weakness in this Guehi-less backline, and they want an equaliser!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:33

Richards goes in hard with his tackle on Fernandes, and the referee gives the free-kick. The away fans begin chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing!” and the home fans join in with them! Neither side is happy with some of the decisions in this game.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:30

CLOSE! From the resulting free-kick, Eze struck the ball hard and low and it deflected off a Southampton foot, before sailing slightly over the bar! That would’ve had Ramsdale worried for a second.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:27

Yellow Card Taylor Jay Harwood-Bellis

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:26

Palace just need to be a tad careful here that they don’t get too complacent. Southampton have been sniffing around their box in the last few minutes, and they could’ve easily scored again.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:25

The second change sees Sulemana join the action as he replaces Armstrong, again in attack. Juric looks to be going for it in the latter stages of the game.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:25

Here comes the double change. The first switch is Onuachu coming off for Archer in attack. Onuachu still awaits his first goal for the Saints.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:24

Archer is being readied by Southampton, in what looks to be a double change coming up.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:23

CHANCE! Mitchell sent a lovely ball across into the box, and Sarr came sliding in to try and convert, but he was just a couple of inches away and the chance disappeared.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:20

Since their return to the Premier League in 2013, no side has had more goalless draws in the competition than Crystal Palace (36). This game has been far from boring, and there is a good chance of more goals to come!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:16

Yellow Card Mateus Gonçalo Espanha Fernandes

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:16

The home fans are now in full voice as their side leads for the first time in this game. Palace have shown a great mindset to come from behind to now be leading. There is still plenty of time left for more goals, however.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:15

Palace lead now, and it’s hard to see a way in which Southampton come back. Palace look in the mood to add even more to their tally.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:10

Goal Eberechi Oluchi Eze

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:09

Substitution Joseph Oluwaseyi Temitope Ayodele-Aribo Lesley Chimuanya Ugochukwu

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:09

Palace have started this half well, and in the same fashion that they ended the first half in. They have gone forward aggressively and have posed a threat to the Southampton defence already.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:08

Onuachu was down for a minute or so after a foul on him, but he’s back up on his feet now and the game is away again.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

16:04

KICK-OFF! The second half is underway, let’s see what this period has in store for the two teams!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:57

Looking to the second half, Palace need to be more clinical going forward. They could be in the clear by now if they had taken the opportunities that they have created so far. Put a couple of them away in the second half, and they will surely get all three points. For Southampton, they need to get up the pitch more. They have shown through their goal that they are capable of attacking, but they aren’t getting forward enough. If they can get the ball further up the pitch regularly, they will have more chance of winning this game. They can’t rely on moments.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:54

There has been 45 minutes of incredible action so far, and the score reads 1-1 as both teams head into the break. Palace started the game excellently and should’ve gone ahead through Eze who shot straight at Ramsdale. It was the away side who opened the scoring against the run of play, after some magnificent work by Walker-Peters on the left. He cut the ball back across the box and after a touch from Armstrong, Dibling smashed in from close range to give Southampton the lead. The rest of the half was all Palace, as they searched for an equaliser, which they then found in the 31st minute. Hughes swung a left-footed corner in and Chalobah rose highest to equalise at the near post. After a short VAR check, the goal was given and the sides were level again. Palace really should be ahead after a plethora of chances in the closing stages of the half, but it’s 1-1 at the break, with plenty of action still to come.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:49

HALF-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:46

There will be two added minutes!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:45

Southampton are ending the half strongly, and they have earned themselves a corner, which the home fans behind the goal weren’t happy about. The set-piece came to nothing, and Palace cleared with ease.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:42

Less than five minutes remain of the first half, and what a half it has been! No one wants it to end, it’s been electric!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:40

CLOSE! How have Palace not gone ahead there!? Mateta dummied a low cross into the box to allow the ball to roll towards Munoz, who was behind him. The right-back seemed surprised to see the ball and flapped at the shot, missing the target from only a yard or two out!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:38

From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Lerma on the left side of the box, and as it was dropping the Colombian attempted an overhead kick! What a great watch this has been so far!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:37

HUGE CHANCE! Sarr fails to put Palace ahead! He showed off his electric pace as he broke in behind with only Ramsdale to beat, but his side-footed finish couldn’t beat the England international. What a save!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:36

What a response that is from Palace to going behind. They were putting on immense pressure in the lead-up to the goal, and Southampton will have felt that it was coming.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:35

The goal is given, and the onfield decision of no foul stands. 1-1!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:33

Assist William James Hughes

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:32

Goal Trevoh Thomas Chalobah

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:32

A part of Mateta’s game that he has massively improved upon is his hold-up play. Playing as a lone striker would have helped with this improvement, but he is now looking like a top player.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:31

Palace are finding their rhythm once again, and the home crowd are really getting behind their team. Southampton have begun to commit silly fouls, which is riling up the supporters.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:27

SAVED! Lerma sent an absolute rocket towards Ramsdale after some nice linkup play with Sarr. The shot was well hit, but it was straight at the Southampton goalkeeper, and he parried it away.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:27

Sarr had a great chance to bring the ball forward as he ran towards the edge of the box. It looked like he got caught in two minds and then got the ball stuck under his feet.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:25

The game has gone into a rather calm state, as both sides are knocking the ball around when they have it. This will favour Southampton.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:23

Southampton haven’t gone as defensive as expected after that opener. They are still trying to get the ball forward when they can, and they are keeping Palace at bay so far.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:21

It is a very puzzling situation that this Palace side find themselves in as we head into the new year. They have bags of quality, as shown at the end of last season, but they can’t seem to get going properly as of late.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:21

How will Palace respond now!? They had been on top for the whole game up until that point, and they need to respond quickly before Southampton shut up shop!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:16

Goal Tyler-Jay Robert Dibling

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:14

You can clearly see a difference in this Southampton team already, as they are taking far less risks than before. The passing inside their half is confident, and when there is danger the ball is cleared before it can develop.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:12

Palace are turning up the heat now as we pass the 10-minute mark. They have had a number of promising opportunities that have turned into half-chances, and they’re closest to the opener as things stand.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:10

CHANCE! Palace go close through Eze again. Mateta pounced on a loose ball before bearing down on goal, but he opted to pass to his attacking counterpart instead of shooting. Eze hit the shot straight away, but it was right at Ramsdale.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:08

Sarr tried a shot from inside his own half, after seeing Ramsdale off his line. There are no prizes for guessing whether the shot went in or not, though.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:06

Southampton have woken up now and have had a few attacks of their own. Some of the blame goes to the Palace defence as they let them through far too easily, but it’s better from the away team.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:03

Palace have started the game as the brighter side, and they have already got the first shot of the game away. It came through Eze, but the effort was tame in the end.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

15:01

KICK-OFF! Michael Salisbury blows his whistle for the first time here, and the game is underway!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

14:58

The teams are out on the pitch, and we’re nearly ready for kick-off here in London!

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

14:53

The only change to Palace’s side that drew 0-0 with Bournemouth is in defence, with Marc Guehi suspended for accumulation of yellow cards. Richards comes into the back three to replace him, and the captain's armband is passed to Hughes who starts in midfield. Riad returns to the squad after picking up a major injury at the start of the season. For Southampton, it’s just the one change as well with Flynn Downes out of the matchday squad. Fernandes drops back into a deeper role and allows Dibling to start in the advanced position. Bednarek captains the team.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

14:48

Ivan Juric took charge of his first game as Southampton boss when his new side lost 1-0 to West Ham in the week. Despite the result, Southampton appeared to be playing better under Juric, and they have the quality in their side that is needed to stay up. Southampton are still at the bottom of the Premier League with only one win under their belts, and as the turn of the year moves ever closer, the need for three points increases. They will be in for a tough game against Palace, but this is more than a winnable game.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

14:43

Oliver Glasner’s team started this Premier League campaign terribly, which has halted their progression throughout the season. They have still only won three matches this season, and their eight draws keep them just outside of the relegation zone. They will see this game as a huge chance to pick up another vital three points, as the teams below them have begun to find some form.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

14:38

The last time these sides faced each other was in the Premier League, with the game ending 2-0 to Palace back in 2023! The two sides have shared many matches over the years and the head-to-head records are very split. Palace have eight wins out of the last 20 games, and Southampton have nine from the same 20. With only three draws in the head-to-head record, we are in for a decisive game here.
