A LOOK at Warrington Town’s results this season alongside the National League North table would have anyone feeling somewhat perplexed.

Yellows’ season appears to have been a case of “the better the opposition, the better the performance and result” given their best days in a difficult campaign have come against the division’s bigger guns.

Another chance to extend that record comes on Saturday – weather permitting – when they travel to Hereford, who currently sit ninth just a point shy of the play-off spots.

Their 2-0 victory over the Bulls in October’s reverse fixture was one of three victories Yellows have over sides currently in the division’s top 10, with fourth-placed Kidderminster Harriers and seventh-placed Buxton also leaving WA4 empty-handed.

Add that to draws against Scunthorpe United, Brackley Town, Darlington and Chorley and the total is 13 points from 11 matches against the highest-ranked sides.

By contrast, Yellows’ 2-1 win at Radcliffe in October is their only victory in nine matches against teams in the bottom 10, with three draws and five damaging defeats, three of which have come in home matches against teams below them in Farsley Celtic, Needham Market and, most recently, Marine.

It is certainly a mystifying record and one that manager Paul Carden is keen to balance out in the right way.

“We’ve got to approach every game with the same mindset,” he said.

“We seem to show-up against the so-called better sides, the bigger clubs and the ones looking to get out of the division.

“We’ve got to flip that on its head and it’s got to be tunnel vision on any team we’re playing.

“We’ve got to have a single-mindedness that we need points and we know that.”

Town currently sit three points above the relegation places in 19th but have played more games than all of the sides around them, who have as many as four games in hand on Carden’s men.

“Rushall’s win last weekend tightens it up and we’ve played more games than everyone, so it’s definitely on for everyone down there,” he said.

“You only need one win to get you bouncing and then, it can soon change around.

“We’ve got to be optimistic but we’ve also got to make sure we’ve got a focus on what we’re good at and what we are.

“When we do that, there’s quality there. We’ve just got to find the right balance in terms of getting it out.”
