Liverpool and Everton's final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park ended in chaos with a late Everton equalizer and a brawl which saw two players sent off after the full-time whistle.

Abdoulaye Doucoure appeared to celebrate in front of Liverpool's away fans, prompting Curtis Jones to take exception. The two teams then clashed with Jones in the middle of the melee as pushing and shoving ensued between the two teams.

Carlos Alcaraz and Ashley Young were both on the scene and tried to split the grappling players after Jones sprinted over to physically stop Doucoure.

Jones was given a second yellow card after the final whistle for his role in the incident, meaning he was sent off and now faces a one-game ban. Doucoure also received a second yellow card for Everton. Liverpool manager Arne Slot was also sent off.

The chaos came after James Tarkowski had fired in a last-gasp equalizer for Everton in the 97th minute. The defender fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net after Mohamed Salah believed he had won it for Liverpool.

The goal was subject to a lengthy VAR check which eventually determined Doucoure was onside in the build up to the goal. A PGMOL statement read: "The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR- who established that Doucouré was in an onside position in the build-up."

Speaking on TNT Sports commentary duty, Rio Ferdinand said: "I have been there. Mario Balotelli at Wembley in front of our [United] fans. I was incensed.

"Curtis Jones saw Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrate in front of the Liverpool fans in the away section, he started giving it to the fans and Jones wasn't happy."

Liverpool legend Steve McManaman said after the game: "It’s apt really, that. The last ever game at Goodison Park is a game like this. It’s like an old school 80s game.

"Bereft of a lot of quality within the game but wow did it have passion, did it have fight, did it have energy. And the fact that there’s a number of sendings off, and we’ll have to get to the bottom of it, at the end of the game.

"People wanting to fight each other, people wanting to antagonize the crowd. I think it’s fitting that it ended like this, in absolute chaos."
