Cwmamman United knocked out of cup by Goodwick United penalty
Cwmamman United's cup journey ended in heartbreak after a penalty decision.
The Pembrokeshire League champions Goodwick United, currently on a 25-match unbeaten streak, secured their place in the next round of the West Wales Intermediate Cup with a disputed penalty in the 79th minute.
Cwmamman United, showing determination supported by a vocal travelling contingent, began the match with promise, but were gradually contained by Goodwick's strong defence.
Despite Goodwick creating only a couple of half-chances, Cwmamman's Charlie Davies and Cam Williams stood out, breaking up Goodwick’s attacks and defending resolutely.
Just before half-time, Cwm's goalkeeper Kurtis Bray, who was otherwise impressive during the match, conceded a penalty after bringing down a Goodwick attacker, but redeemed himself by saving Rhys Jones’ attempt.
The second half saw a tense battle between both teams, with chances at a premium.
Each side hitting the post showcased the tight nature of the contest, with Bray making several excellent saves, keeping Cwmamman level.
However, in the 79th minute, a cross from the Goodwick side clipped a Cwmamman defender’s arm, leading to what Cwm described as a controversial penalty being awarded.
Rhys Jones made no mistake this time, putting Goodwick ahead.
Cwmamman pushed for an equaliser in the dying minutes, with Taylor Smith coming close, but the robust Goodwick defence held firm, securing a 1-0 victory.
Cwmamman United will now shift their focus back to league action, where they will face Ynystawe Athletic in a Macron Premier League game at Grenig Park on Friday, February 7, at 7pm.
