Dad's influence, secret trip - Man United icon Ander Herrera finally earns shock dream transfer
Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is closing in on a move to Argentinian side Boca Juniors, according to reports this week.
The 35-year-old represented the Red Devils for five years between 2014 and 2019 having signed from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao. He made over 180 appearances in that time and won both the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.
He then signed for Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer a little over five years ago and then returned to Bilbao on a permanent basis in 2023. He is out of contract in the summer and it appears he could be on the move this month.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Boca Juniors are working on a deal to sign the midfielder in January. It has been claimed talks are at an advanced stage with the player set to travel to Argentina ahead of a medical next week.
Romano also indicated that it has long been one of the player's desires to represent Boca Juniors, who are one of the 'big five' clubs in Argentina, alongside River Plate, San Lorenzo, Independiente and Racing Club.
The player revealed his wish back in 2016, when speaking about his father Pedro Maria's role as technical director at Real Zaragoza. Speaking to Marca (via the Mirror) Herrera said: “Yes, I love Boca. Since childhood, when my father brought players from there.
“If one day I get the chance to play in South America, I’d love to go to Boca, the biggest. But it is an idea, eh?
“I’m focused on my team. Ah, and with Marcos Rojo I have sometimes seen sometimes Estudiantes, which is his club.”
In the summer of 2023, Herrera also flew to South America to watch Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores as he reunited with former United teammate Marcos Rojo. The defender departed Old Trafford in February 2021 as he signed for Boca Juniors on a free transfer, where he has played his football ever since.
Speaking during that visit, the midfielder further demonstrated his passion for Boca according to Mundo Albiceleste. He said: ”I’m a little crazy about Boca and sometimes I would stay until 2-3 am to watch Riquelme and one day I put out a tweet and it went viral. A slow fake, he looks slow but he speeds up the game.
“It’s one of my dreams that I’ve always had, to be able to go to la Bombonera. My father used to come here a lot because he worked in the sports management of Zaragoza and Celta and signed many Argentines.
“I have a collection (Boca shirts). I remember my dad would always come, I would tell him that when Boca would come out onto the pitch to call me even if it was 2am. I wanted to listen to it (fans) and tomorrow I will be able to live it.”
Herrera could reunite with Rojo once again if he is to make the move as the Argentina international remains under contract until December. Boca Juniors begin their 2025 season later this month with a Copa Argentina first round tie, followed by their first league game against Argentinos Juniors.
