The transfer window clock is ticking and Coventry City are still yet to make a signing. They have come really close with Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo set to join the Sky Blues on loan last Wednesday, only for the deal to fall flat on its face on Thursday due to a disagreement between the clubs, with reports claiming they had been unable to agree on the bonuses involved as part of the deal.

CoventryLive now understands that deal is completely dead in the water and City have switched their attention elsewhere. Frank Lampard has made no secret of the fact he would like to ‘help’ his squad by adding on the wings where he has a number of injuries, while the absence of Ben Sheaf with a calf strain means he’s also short of midfield options.

With just nine days left until the mid-term trading ends on Monday, February 3, we asked the head coach when fans are likely to see a new face.

“I don’t know,” he said with a chuckle, clearly keeping in line with owner Doug King’s secrecy policy on transfers.

“We’re still looking at it and we communicate very well, obviously not communicating to you guys very well because it would be wrong to speak about players. I know it’s your job and I expect you to ask the question but I am not going to speak about any other players but we are looking to up the squad.”

Some fans have been doubting whether any new signings will be made this month. King insisted when he sacked Mark Robins that he had a "top six deck" of players, and three Championship wins on the trot has edged City closer to the play-off places, the club now just six points off.

But asked whether the fact that the team’s form and results have picked up in recent weeks means there’s less urgency to get in new players during the window, Lampard said: “I don’t know. I think it’s always dangerous in the window to get too up and down about results because there is some bigger picture stuff and areas of the squad you might know, and there are lots of games still to come. So I think we are a little bit short in the squad and if we can help it, that fact remains the same.

“You can take it as you want, when we’re losing games it’s like, ‘what do we do...’ and when you’re winning games you’re thinking, ‘how can we improve even more to improve the squad,’ so I wouldn’t float too much up and down on results.”
