Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf would be a nifty signing for Daniel Farke and would “obviously make the team better”.

United are expected to have a quiet January window, albeit will stay alert to any potential opportunistic deals. The Whites are currently overloaded with midfield options amid the return of the injured Ilia Gruev.

Farke also has Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rothwell, Ao Tanaka and Josuha Guilavogui to choose from. Midfield is therefore not thought to be one area of concern.

There are no indications that Leeds are considering Arsenal academy graduate Sheaf at this stage, but Robinson nevertheless believes the 26-year-old would be a solid addition.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the former England international said: “He’s a good player. Came through the Arsenal academy, is 26 years of age and is playing regularly at Coventry. The opportunity for someone to capitalise on Coventry’s financial situation might be what gets a deal done.”

Last March, under new owner Doug King, Coventry announced that post-tax losses had reduced to £4.7million for the 2022/23 season down from £6.7m the previous year. Since then, the Sky Blues made the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and finished inside the top 10 of the Championship, both of which incur significant prize money.

Coventry skipper Sheaf, who played two senior games for Arsenal before his permanent exit to the Sky Blues in 2021, is an integral part of Frank Lampard’s set-up, having started all nine of the new manager’s Championship matches so far. He still has another 18 months left on his contract at the CBS Arena.

Robinson added: “I think he’s excelled in the last two or three years, also playing at international level with England Under-18s. Would he improve the [Leeds] squad? Yes, he would.

“Would you get in every week? Arguably, he would be put in. A player like that would obviously make the team better but I don’t think there’s a huge rush.”
