Daniel Sturridge has claimed Liverpool is the best side in Europe and has said the team could ‘do anything’ under the ‘fantastic’ Arne Slot.

Since taking charge in the summer, the Dutchman has quickly established the Reds among the continent's preeminent clubs, which has coincided with the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid seeing their standards slip this season.

With Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League and Champions League, and still competing in four competitions, Sturridge’s view that Liverpool is the top side in Europe is certainly justified.

“At this particular time they are the best team in Europe [with] the way they’re performing,” the former striker said on Amazon Prime Video ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Lille. “The hard part for me, psychologically, for him as a coach, it’s what do you deem as success at this point?

“We’re saying they’re the best team in the world and are competing for four competitions and I think they do have the squad - we spoke about players who could potentially join the team to help them get to the next level, but with what they’ve got going on right now, they could do anything.”

Perhaps the most impressive element about Liverpool this season has been Slot’s ability to harness the best aspects of Jurgen Klopp’s team - it’s dynamic and devastating attacks - while adding great control through midfield and a more solid defensive base. The incoming manager certainly has earned an admirer in Sturridge.

“I’m really excited for him because the way he has got this team going is absolutely fantastic,” said the 35-year-old. “They have taken on his tactics very early; he seems to be an amazing guy when he does his interviews and is very honest. I think as a former player, and a fan of Liverpool, I really respect and admire that.”

Liverpool heads into the game against Lille knowing a point will secure a top-eight finish and guarantee a spot in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Reds are also hoping to top the 36-team table which will result in a more favourable last-16 opponent.
